Hi folks, techMama Lynn here. I think this time I got it right. I've been banging on it behind the scenes most of today. I still have a few things to clean up, but I thought I'd give you back most of the site. Please bang on it and tell me what's broken HERE. Please don't start a new thread. thanks so much for your patience!!

ps: I also think I discovered why the site keeps going down/slowing up, and I think I fixed it. double yay!

page too wide

The page is too wide for my very wide resolution screen because of the double column on the left; it's hard to scroll left and right as well as down when reading something so text rich. Can you put the ads underneath the menu stuff instead of having them next to each other? The blogs page is super long enough to handle both columns on top of each other.

no I really can't

Seriously, there are a lot of reasons why I can't (not least of which are ad contracts that specify placement). But I can sure work on this--I don't want a left/right scroll. I'm on a laptop (read: fairly low res, like 1024) using Firefox for Mac OS X, and I don't have to scroll left/right, so I'm pretty sure this is a browser/CSS compatibility problem. What browser are you using, what OS, and what is your screen resolution? Thanks for the bug report.

bummer

I'm also having this problem. Is it possible to put the frames on either side of the blogs like they were?

I'm on a 13" MAC ibook g4 using Safari. I haven't tried it with my widescreen PC but I'll take a look and get back to you.

I will probably give people the option

...of to the right or center. It very probably won't affect the width problem. Give me a bit of time, like till tomorrow, to set that up. When it is set up, it'll appear as a drop-down menu on the bottom of the left-hand side.

I have Safari; I'll check into it.

Thanks again for all of your hard work!

YAY! i no longer have to scroll!

Though I'm having to chime in with the yellow not being so nice on the eyes, though I do appreacite you trying to match it to the stars! Maybe try the blue? i think it's just kind of distracting, but I think the blue might not have as much contrast.

Smile

Also there is only one font that I can tell but there are several sizes and I think it gives the illusion of many fonts.

colors and fonts

I brought the yellow way down.

It's just the one font. If I make everything the same size font-wise that's not going to go well--it'll make everything run together kinda weird.

I'm asking y'all to sit with it for a day or so and see what you think.

check now

The problem *should* be resolved. Make sure you clear your browser cache (it's in your preferences) and let me know.

the left right scroll seems to be fixed, good work Smile I'm using Safari on mac 0sx, powerbook g4, btw, with a res of 1152x768.
i wasn't into the yellow until you pointed out the logo colors, now i like the sense of matching to that.

Thanks Lynn,

one thing that I noticed was that in my most recent blog entry titled "Lucas' birth story", there are all these weird symbols throughout the post. Do you know why??

ok,

it seems like wherever there is an apostrophy (how the hell do you spell that?) or a coma, there is a funky symbol instead with a tm at the end. does anyone else see this? I haven't seen anywhere else yet...

the deal with the weird symbols

When I upgraded, we faced the Dreaded Swedish MySQL Problem. See, MySQL--our database--is developed in Sweden. And so the Swedes decided when they made version 4.1 to change the default character encoding from general to Swedish. Four versions, something like 8 years, general has been the default and they decide to go all IKEA *now*. This has caused great havoc in some development communities, and Drupal--our software--was not immune.

The main take-away is not to use special characters (for example, em-dashes, ellipses other than three actual periods) or "fancy" quotation marks if you can help it--not my term, it's a real one. If you write your posts in, say, Word, it will make your quotation marks and apostrophes "fancy," and "fancy" pasted into Hipmama may come out funky. I haven't tested out whether the funkiness is just in past posts or new ones; if anyone wants to try a test, go for it.

The easiest work-around if you don't like to write in the browser is not to write in a word processor but in Notepad or TextEdit--a plain text editor of some kind--and/or use plain quotation marks, plain apostrophes, a double dash instead of an em-dash, and three plain periods instead of a fancy ellipse character. Be sure to save as plain text, not formatted text or as a word document. Another term you might see would be ASCII.

Or hey, try writing directly in the form window! Smile They're even resizeable now; you'll see a light gray bar at the bottom of text entry fields with a sort of a corner in the lower right of the bar. Try grabbing that and resizing. cool, no?

performance issues

The web server is still being overwhelmed, and I'm having a hard time figuring out why and how to stop it. It's an issue for both Hipmama and for my own site, The New Homemaker; we share this box, and when Hipmama is down TNH is down. I tell you this so that you understand just how dedicated I am to fixing this. I've got some bugtracking tools installed and I'm digging through the manuals. I so appreciate your patience. This was a problem *before* the upgrade and I was hoping that upgrading would solve it. It didn't. Sad

Lynn thanks so much for all

Lynn thanks so much for all your hard work! I'm not having any issues with any site functionality, just aesthetic issues...the bright yellow is hard on my eyes.

I am not into the yellow so much either. Additionally I don't enjoy this layout...the yellow, but also all of the bookmarking things, too many different fonts, so much space used on the left side. It's harder to read.

different fonts, too much space

Can you send me a screenshot (lynn@siprelle.com)? There should be only ONE font, and the stuff on the left should be taking up 360 pixels max.

As for the yellow, don't know what to tell you about that. I was trying to keep it light and match the stars in the logo.

Edit: Also on my screen the yellow is a lot more mellow than it apparently is on some other screens. I'll try toning it down. Also I reduced the number of service links (digg, del.icio.us, etc) and hope that helps. I have an alternate center theme--like the old one--prepped but I'm having trouble getting the site to recognize both of them for some reason. Hang tight and watch the bottom of the page, left side, for the switcher, or just go to your account and edit which theme you're seeing.

ANY screenshots people can send me of problematical layout issues would be helpful. Right now I'm dealing less actively with that than with the pernicious server problems, which are costing both me and Hipmama a lot of $$ (not in my time, btw--in ad $$). I can't for the life of me track down what's wrong. I'm calling my best geek buddy in for assistance.

Thanks for toning the yellow down! I meant to tell you earlier,

Thanks for toning the yellow down! I meant to tell you earlier, that on my computer it was bright neon yellow but on my phone browser it was dark golden yellow. I figured it must have looked dark to you, too.

actually it looked light!

I always forget that something that looks bleached-out on a Mac is going to look "normal"--much darker--on a Windows box. To see the yellow now I have to angle my screen quite a bit. I hope it looks better to you now.

Thanks for your hard work and determination. The yellow is lovely now. I just discovered mama center & mama right... It changes everything. How clever. Have you had a coffee break yet? I think you deserve one.

I'm going to go have a nervous breakdown now.

I can't drink coffee--or martinis! darn the luck--but I can have a nervous breakdown. In a bit, once the hot water heater has recharged, I intend to have a nice long shower. And maybe a nap.

Did you take off you is currently logged in? Or am I missing that. Because that seems to be gone on my computer. Just wondering. Remember the list of who is on or not?

it's only on the front page now

I'm trying to cut down on overhead as much as possible; the "who's online" etc blocks eat up memory. Something keeps overwhelming the web server. It's not happening as often as it did earlier today, but it's still happening, and it's driving me sane.

you can always see it on the front page

...and as soon as I figure out what the problem is, I promise I'll restore it on the inside pages.

Del.icio.us, Digg and Reddit are social bookmarking sites (all of the links in this sentence go to Wikipedia's descriptions of them). From Wikipedia, bless they pointy heads:

The Social bookmarking sites are a popular way to store, classify, share and search links through the practice of folksonomy techniques on the Internet or Intranet. ...
In a social bookmarking system, users store lists of Internet resources that they find useful. These lists are either accessible to the public or a specific network, and other people with similar interests can view the links by category, tags, or even randomly. Some allow for privacy on a per-bookmark basis.

They also categorize their resources by the use of informally assigned, user-defined keywords or tags (see folksonomy). Most social bookmarking services allow users to search for bookmarks which are associated with given "tags", and rank the resources by the number of users which have bookmarked them. Many social bookmarking services also have implemented algorithms to draw inferences from the tag keywords that are assigned to resources by examining the clustering of particular keywords, and the relation of keywords to one another.

Its increasing popularity and competition have extended the services to offer more than just sharing bookmarks, such as rating, commenting, the ability to import and export, add notes, reviews, email links, automatic notification, feed subscription, web annotation, create groups and social networks.

Reasons to use them:

1) Sharing bookmarks with friends;

2) Keeping your bookmarks where you can get to them from any computer (ie, work vs home);

3) Promoting and popularizing sites you support--like hipMama! Smile

i guess i wasn;t really clear when i wrote it the way i did
