Mr. DIY
He turned three two months ago, and has been on the biggest "I can do it 'cause I'm a three year old" tear. Actually tries to argue with me about crossing the street by himself.
Fed the goldfish all by himself. As in, pushed a chair to the counter, climbed up, got the fish food out of the cabinet, opened it up without spilling, took just the right amount, and fed the fish. Then, he actually put the fish food back!
I let him use scissors with very light (almost none...yeah, call CPS)supervision. He can work them very well and has made a great deal of confetti. He also uses a butter knife to cut up whatever food he's eating into really, really small pieces.
This morning his heart was broken when I didn't let him go all by himself down the two flights of stairs to the front door of our building and into the street to the waiting carpool ride to daycare. He wanted me to stay upstairs.
"Three year olds don't get splinters!" This is what he told me as he scaled a wooden fence when I had my back turned.
"Mama, you shouldn't just snatch things out of people's hands like that!" I think I took away a bottle of poison or a meat cleaver or something.
He likes to put the house/car/whatever keys into the locks. Any attempt at intervention is met with, "No, Mama! I can DOOO-OOO IT!" Have to be careful here so I don't wind up as the parent in the news article who's kid drives to the video store in the middle of the night.
gonna slap you.
who took a bus to the movies all by himself. took fare from the house, went to the bus stop, got on the RIGHT bus, stopped at the theater, then realized he didn't know how to buy tickets.
i wish mine was like that. i don't think dd ever uttered the words, "i can do it." it's always, "can't you get it for me?" or, "why do you MAKE me do things (like butter her bread. she's six) MYSELF?"
good for him.

Threes love to be independent!
I'm very impressed about the butter knife. He must have good fine motor skills. Mine were definitely older than three before they mastered cutting up meat. And good job on the scissors, many moms won't even let their kids have scissors at 3. I used to let my kids have kid scissors at that age, and I did always supervise because I was afraid someone might suddenly get curious as to how easy it is to cut hair, or maybe try to get up and walk around with them.
He sounds like a very "big" little guy.
Have fun, and hide the car keys.
That kicks ass.
Hahahahahaaaaa that was so funny to read! Kids are so cute when they realize they can do some things; get that first flush of independence.
