I love those. I look at them from time to time wondering how wonderful it would be to live in a tiny house. Then I remember that I am the only one in the family that I can convince to live in one. Oh well. A girl can dream!

oh but v, my dear, thats not all...They make 3 bedroom models!

ive been thinking about how a modular/removable porch extension could be build into one of these, that would allow my kid to have a space to run around on and for me to dance on, which, is the major downside of a small house. not enough room to dance. well, thats the major downside for me, anyway. im from another planet where dancing is more important than plumbing.

I did not know about the three bedroom versions...I have always thought they were cute, but mostly for folks who want to live alone. I need space to put all my instruments and art stuff and dance while ramona does gymnastics. And I like having people over. So does Ramona, sometimes I got 5 kids over here.

Re: This is the answer to ALL your problems

me too, thats the conundrum i have as well. im not willing to downgrade on musical instruments and art supplies and wiggle space. especially during these long hard winters. however, the principles of design allow for such possibilities. have you ever looked closely at the small apartments that ikea has pictures of in thier catalogs? if most of the stuff is off the floor and on hooks, behind large sliding doors, on adjustable narrow depth shelving, you free up a bunch of wiggle room and floor space. Also, I was thinking that the kitchen should take up only one side of a wall, where a washer/dryer combo can be mounted under the sink and the drain can be redirected outside by positioning the drain hole in the sink towards the wall. if you have really good, stylish wall cabinets with big doors that are inconspicous and act as walls when theybare closed, your space looks totally clean and open. expensive, definately - but you pay about 90% less in utilities, taxes, insurance, and maintenance (if you own), and the value of your home isnt affected by the economy, especially if you use good hardwoods - that last a hundred years and dont depreciate. not to mention, you dont spend all your time on housewifery, which seems to be a dilemma for me with my monstrosity i call a home.

a 258 sq ft apartment complete with full size fridge, dishwasher, shower and space for 40 guests apparently!

this is what i meant by having everythijg behind the walls. actually, you dont have to hire an architecht to do this. ikea sells melamine doors for 5$ to 150$ depending on size - and the cushiony latches that you can push down on - those are i think around 10-20$ a set. 1000$ and a screwdriver, and some 2x4 to attach the doors to and divide up the sections, and your set. you could even use a regular wobbly saw to cut your wood. or, you could just buy 1/2" plywood sheets for 20$, cut em with a circular saw to size and clear coat them. less than 400$ for that option.

ok i can barely contain myself now, whoever wants to join in my yammering on about technical details and possibilities is encouraged to do so!
jay shaffer's models run from 15 - 70k. it seems like a lot considering how difficult it might be to get a loan on such a thing...however, if you were to buy a big uhaul truck, and avoid building the framework, and just use the same principles to redesign the interior, it could be something that someone on a poverty level income could afford to invest in, and fix up over time. if you have the basics installed - sink, fridge, bath, stove and bed - you can work on fixing it up and you go along. i mean, imagine how this might change a situation for a mom with a kid who needs to split fast? for people on section 8 waiting lists? i should a write a book on how to do this, thats accesuble for people who arent jay shaffer, and know nothing about building, and has shortcuts for how to have other people do the work to your specifications. also, i have this great idea for a modular shower made of flexible polyethylene - that folds down like an accordian when not in use, and has a sturdy platform base and a flexible pex drainhose that you can stick out a car window or whatever. the water would be in one of those solar shower bags and hung in a hook, only made of silicone and have its own separate battery powered heating element that can heat up the water kind of like a hotpot. 5 gallons would probably take like 15 minutes to heat maybe? well, enough talk. i suppose if i really believe in this stuff i need to do something about it. i think im gonna call my cabinet making friends.

I <3 the Ikea catalog with it's small spaces and i of course love Ikea stuff...

With the reality that Mr Right & I are going ot be combining our households inot his smallish 2 bedroom 1 bath condo, many ofthis weekend's discussions have been related to utilization of space for the 1 1/2 years we will have 3 -4 kiddos living with us in this space before we move into something with more bedrooms. I am going to share some of these ideas with him

Thank you

& I too geek out on those tiny houses!

Have you seen the ones made out of salvaged shipping containers?

Re: This is the answer to ALL your problems

i've seen video of a guy who lives in one of these and he essentially just keeps his shit outside the house. and he only keeps clothes for one season. and he lives alone. and has a root cellar outside for a good portion of his food.

i love not having more than i need, i tend to feel suffocated under too much crap if i have more, but practically speaking, if you live in a space that has more than one season and you're more than two people, you will need at least a few hundred square feet.

i saw the shipping containers, they seem really aesthetically unappealing to me. and theyre expensive. heres a design concept that could be expanded upon in a small house : http://gizmodo.com/5801068/this-super-tiny-apartment-is-an-amazing-trans....
