tell me about your mixers for baking
so fall is coming and it's time to resume my cake and breadmaking. i'm thinking this year's expenditure in this direction would be a good mixer, which i had always assumed would be a kitchenaid. but i've been reading that kitchenaid was bought by whirlpool and therefore are no better than whirlpools.
i need a mixer that can knead yeasted dough. a lot of the reviews of the kitchenaids that i've read from the last several years seem to indicate that they are really best for batters and eggs and whatnot, and not for long stretches of time either. which, if you ask me, is WHY you need a stand mixer, if you could stand there and mix it for a couple minutes, then you can use a $20 black and decker.
so, if you bake a lot and know your shit about mixers, please tell me what the current heavy-duty professional mixer is. one that, if you were going to splurge on one item this year, you would buy.
thanks, skanks.

I wouldn't buy anything new, I'd go to eBay or an estate sale and get an OLD Kitchenaid.
I got mine 14 years ago. It still makes great cakes and kneads the bread for me when I'm not feeling patient enough to hand-knead it. I am personally acquainted with one that is Harvest Gold, and has been in service since 1971.
If you really, really want new and powerful, Viking is the bee's knees, but way out of my price range at $450 or so...but hey, if you can go that route, I believe it even beats Kitchenaid.

If you can find one, get the 6-cup. It holds enough dough for 2 loaves of bread without the dough crawling up and over the collar of the dough hook.
I think Whirlpool took over in 2007, and likely quality was wobbling if the company was for sale to begin with...I'd shoot for maybe 7 years old.
Look for what I call the "Mother's Day reject appliances" at tag sales or auction sites...you know, the ones that the family bought for a relative who had zero interest in the item, so never used it. A hint that you've struck gold is that it's still in the dusty box, and has all of the booklets and warranty cards because the recipient never even completely unpacked it. Sometimes the accessories are still taped to the cardboard they were shipped in!

very fancy-dancy. and probably well worth that money, if i had it, but i don't so it's moot.
how old should i go, when looking for a kitchenaid? i remember going through this when finding my sewing machine for $100. it's from the 70's and kicks ass.
