bento boxes for kids
so my kid decided she wanted to do bento as her lunchbox this year, and make her own bento shit. it's pricey, but i'm hoping it can be a way for her to eat better and have more control over what she puts into her. her eating habits have become pitiful. for this reason, if she loses interest, i'm willing to step in and make stuff for her, even though she's in sixth grade.
since her very favoritest way to learn something is from youtube tutorials, she's been watching bento videos for about three weeks now, and shopping for the cutest bento boxes ever.
so far we have a box, and a lunchbox, sushi grass, little decorative cupcake cup thingies, and a thermos. tonight we play with seasoned sticky rice. she's got an idea how to make a bunny, with an anus. she wants to perfect it before the school year to impress her friends.
anyhoo... a really cool youtube channel is "cooking with dog," which covers a lot of japanese cooking, not just bento:
any other leads on this would be appreciated.

to declare a love of bento. i do this thing where i get hell bent crazy on things and then get over them, and i went through a bento thing and ordered mad bento stuff from ichiban. rice molds for onigiri = the best thing ever, and octidogs, and eggs in the shape of bunnys...yeah i heart bento.
that's awesome that she's doing that, it's like a f'ing art form.
I need to take a look around that site. I am so bored of making lunches for my DD and she eats the same stuff over and over. I need to involve her more in the process.
M1 went through this last year -- http://justbento.com/ was our BFF.

There's also a list right there on the left side of the page: Bento Basics. So much help.
Those are excellent! Hoorah bento!
I have been making bento lunches for the last two years - but I don't do Japanese. Honestly, I want more fruit and protein in my son's lunch - but I digress.
The secret to Bento boxes isn't in the fancy cutting or decorating - its in the packing things tightly. So you need to have lots of space filler stuff around. Like cherry tomatoes, or grapes, or dried cranberries, or cashews. Trader Joes appetizers make great instant bento box main courses.
My must have stuff - standard sized two level box, "dessert sized" box, main course sized thermos, tiny containers for ketchup, soy sauce, salad dressing, peanut butter, etc, small water tight containers for applesauce or yogurt, silicon muffin cup liners, and hard boiled egg molds.
lunchinabox.net is my favorite site for ideas
Have fun!

is get her meal in small portions, with a variety of foods, i will be very happy. honestly, what she is making tomorrow is fluffernutters, rolled like sushi. you know, baby steps. we made stupid looking rice balls, too many for anyone to eat. tomorrow we will put faces on some of them. and little buttholes.
but, it never occurred to me and it's just stupid, to season vegetables to make them more interesting to eat. i watched these videos and they're preparing all these vegetables by soaking them in salt, frying them and rolling them in honey, vinegar... all shit that would have totally changed her vegetable experience had i thought of it.
being vegetarian and hating eggs, our choices are limited to the beans and rice and vegetables. oh and noodles. yay noodles! eat em with chopsticks!
