This is a great one from Ms. Millay......

The Penitent

I HAD a little Sorrow,
Born of a little Sin,
I found a room all damp with gloom
And shut us all within;
And, "Little Sorrow, weep," said I,
"And, Little Sin, pray God to Die,
And I upon the floor will lie
And think how bad I've been!"

Alas for pious planning--
It mattered not a whit!
As far as gloom went in that room,
The lamp might have been lit!
My Little Sorrow would not weep,
My Little Sin would go to sleep--
To save my soul I could not keep
My graceless mind on it!

So up I got in anger,
And took a book I had,
And put a ribbon in my hair
To please a passing lad.
And, "One thing there's no getting by--
I've been a wicked girl," said I;
"But if I can't be sorry, why,
I might as well be glad!"

Big smile Feel free to chime in with other favorite poet recommendations- Dorothy Parker's a keeper too. I plan to start some real summer reading, so suggestions r welcome. Hopefully I'm not breaking any copyright laws here.

THE ALIENS

you may not believe it
but there are people
who go through life with
very little
friction of distress.
they dress well, sleep well.
they are contented with
their family
life.
they are undisturbed
and often feel
very good.
and when they die
it is an easy death, usually in their
sleep.

you may not believe
it
but such people do
exist.

but i am not one of
them.
oh no, I am not one of them,
I am not even near
to being
one of
them.
but they
are there

and I am
here.

I thought u were in the shower!

Mockingbird Wish Me Luck is one of my favorite collections of his. There's a poem about showering in there, but it's not really appropriate for this forum. I've always wanted to get drunk and steal some green corn because of Bukowski.
