Tiny houses!
http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/ Check it out!!!! Wanna skip the whole mortgage thing?? Live simply & energy efficiently? Just make sure you have a big backyard! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbRvsWuWNUM
I know, I know, kids, right? Bouncing off the tiny walls- but there are some 3 bedroom versions here...... I think they are really cute. And they kind of force you to live in a great location because you'd have to go outside a lot in order to not lose it. And you can build your own! Maybe after my son is grown and has his own place. Or we could each have a tiny house when he's a teenager & eat meals together. Some warm, beautiful location.......and, uh, internet access for graphic design...... okay so I'm dreaming here. The world is built on dreams though! Lemme dream!

I love tiny houses.
I once stayed in Ashville NC at a hostel (downtown? really neatO neighbourhood) out behind the hostel in this little cabin... it had a loft and lots of shelf space and such.
it was the most amazing little place. And there were gardens around, it was like a little getaway right in the middle of town. so neat. and easy to heat in winter too... not that you'd neat it in NC.
Granted, it was just me and my boyfriend. now i have three boys and a husband... still though I am looking into this.
thanks for posting Birdie!

Wow, that is so cool!

I have a fantasy about getting the teeniest tiny house, just to have somewhere quiet to go read!
But on the less-tiny but more affordable fantasy housing, check out this site-

Completely awesome. My husband and I took the twins out camping last year, and stayed in one. Ours was a 16'and totally enough space. very comfy. when we moved here to NC last year we were talking pretty seriously about getting one and dropping on some acreage. Maybe the next go-round.
I hope your dream comes true! It sounds wonderful!
and where does he keep his shit? or does he only have those five shirts and jackets? garden tools, off season clothes, laundry supplies, linens. there's nothing novel about living in a trailer, which is all that is. build a tiny home with a real masonry foundation that's meant to stay where it is and keep costs and taxes down, that's cool and people do that. but this guy has a wooden trailer. you see at the end there when he got serious, he jumped up to 650 square feet in order to have plumbing and everything you actually need in a house.
for some reason it reminded me of a guy i knew who liked to say that he was trying to live simply and not amass a lot of stuff. yeah, he slept whereever he could, and kept all his space consuming shit at his mom's. oh, but he was all for the psychic benefits of being free from stuff. but for his mom, well fuck her.
no problem, he hates stuff so he has almost nothing. I actually want one of the larger tumbleweed homes. We've talked about it & they have some with more square footage than the last time we looked which makes it more tempting. I love how intelligently the space is planed. Someday, when we're a little better off financially.
