so i'm in the mood for doom and death, right?
probably the death metal. actually i know it is. looking at the cover art made me wanna look at the shit that stuff is based on. cannibal corpse's artist also happens to draw for some comics i've liked.
but Mr Filth talked me into going to Brooklyn Museum, rather than the Met, which we both know has enough cool medieval shit to make a day out of that alone. but he was sick of the met, so he convinced me to go there.
well it had two neato religious paintings, so it was not what i went there for.
i'm like well, i'm here anyway, let's go to the next floor.
well guess what was there? a whole gallery of feminist art. the european paintings were sparse, but the feminist shit was fantastically curated. but that's not what i'm writing about.
i walk in the place and guess what's there. the fucking Dinner Party. the famous work from 1979 that pays tribute to women in history, and as the artist put it, its purpose was to "end the ongoing cycle of omission in which women were written out of the historical record."
i'd seen something on pbs about this and i was like yeah, nice idea. holy craparoo, seeing it in person is quite a different story. it's IMMENSE. and so amazingly detailed. you can spend hours there, reading over the names and looking at all the tokens that are placed at these womens' place settings. i'm not usually down with political art, so i wrote this one off, i was never interested in seeing it in person.
i won't try to describe it too much, i'm not down with interpreting art either. but go see it. if you live in the tri state area, do make time to check out that.
another piece that had me in stitches was "reception"
that wedding cake is made entirely of tampons.

I've seen some of her art, and the mom of one of my friends was involved in the Birth Project--another collaborative piece from the 70's. Part of what I like about judy is that she changed her last name into something she wanted, mostly as a feminist statement.
Aside from that, it's super cool that you got to see that particular piece up close. The SFMOMA houses the. "R Mutt 1917" urinal that was THE piece that started dadaism and surrealism (you have your creepy midEvil paintings, I have my melting watches)--and, by extension, Found Object Art. Just standing next to it is so meaningful for me. So, I feel ya on that one.

Thanks for sharing, lol.....The artist is so lovely, she's glows when she talks about her art- you can tell she means well- she has a message to send to the world....and a dowry! Ahhhh!
Hmmm. 4 days in Brooklyn via train & back by car with a personal tour guide, cheap thrift store clothes shopping, museums, art spaces, music, food etc. etc. with an overnight in New Hampshire on the ocean- or kicking it in San Francisco for a week??? It's still up in the air..... actually leaning towards Brooklyn at this point. We'll see.
I would love to. I am pretty much torn down the middle about which place to go right now. I'm aiming to make a choice by nightfall and stick with it- I HAVE told myself that if I don't go to Brooklyn this break I'll go as soon as school gets out (hopefully I'll have a little down time) and if I go to Brooklyn I'll go to San Francisco when the semester is over. REALLY. I'm thinking that if I promise myself this, I'll better be able to decide which place is better for me RIGHT NOW, in space and time.
see, look, and if you come to the left coast, i can definitely take you to see some weird shit.
It's getting down to the line and I can't seem to make up my mind. I didn't buy the tickets yet because I thought that I had a week before departure to buy them- but the hitch with the tix is if you get the low fare you have to stay for at least a month- so the price of the plane tickets just went up to $468, which is DOable.....
But I haven't planned an itinerary yet. It's pretty loose at this point. So thank you, for the museum offer........ I'll try to PM you tonight.
I think I need to make a pro's and con's list.

but if you do choose brooklyn, i can definitely take you to a couple of galleries and/or a good place to eat. thrift shopping, you'd have to come to jersey for me to show you around. all i've found in brooklyn is trendy "vintage" shops staffed by hipsters. but jersey? the junk is c'est magnifique!
