Ice dancing, curling and national anthems

I have always had a thing for sparkley spandex suits and dramatic flowing skirts fluttering over the ice rink to equally dramatic tunes. And tonight when the Canadians knocked the Gold from the Russians for the first time since 1960, it was sweet. But what was even sweeter were the hugs that the Amerian Silver-winning team and the Canadian Team shared with each other, they were so genuinely thrilled for one another. (they also apparently train together). Sweeter yet, my little children whooping at the win, and then singing the national anthem when it played during the medal ceremony. I got a big fat lump in my throat. This cheering on sports is all kind of new to me. I'm the artsy mom, the egg-head mom, not the sport mom, but I'm learning. (just had a 6 page glossy article in Concrete Wave, a skateboarding mag, about parenting speedy children, so I've been learning a bit about sport)

Then I took three of my four kiddies to watch women's curling last week and whitnessed a tight race between the Russians and Americans... and the Americans won a solid victory in the 10th end.

I was prepared for bored kids, for 'when can we go' or 'is it over yet' and then they surprised me again, 'mom, when can we go curling???'. Who knew? So, following the olympics, i have promised to take them curling. And yes, I've curled before, but its been more than a decade, possibly two, but it's never tooo late to learn. I think... Laughing out loud

that's cool

that you guys got to go watch curling! It's kinda hypnotic, the curling. Sort of zen, at least to watch. My husband likes it a lot cos of all the strategy involved. At it's fun to watch the Americans because, on the men's team, I believe every single one of them is from Minnesota, which is where we live. I like to picture them going to the St Paul Curling Club, which is next door to one of our favorite bars and down the street from my favorite bookstore.

We are a sports-watching family, although I prefer watching live sports. And I prefer it if I have someone that I'm rooting for otherwise I just feel bad for the team that loses. It's funny because neither my husband nor I were sports-players and in fact had a lot of angst around sports as kids. We were definitely more nerdy and artsy types. But now we go to baseball (MLB) and basketball (women's college) games regularly. We're still incredibly nerdy, don't get me wrong! And we'd both rather be put in solitary confinement than play a team sport (that isn't foos ball! hahaha). Oh okay correction: my husband would happily play any team sport so long as he was good at it (um, yes, he likes to WIN). Me: not so much, I'd rather read a book.

I totally get all choked up on the national anthem thing. Then I get pissed off at myself for getting choked up at the US's national anthem cos it's all about war and you know, overblown nationalistic patriotism. argh.

Thanks, It's funny the

Thanks, It's funny the reaction to one's anthem. the older I get th more choked up I get. I quite love the American national anthem, and it's funny about how it is all referencing the war of 1812 and attack of Fort MacHenery: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star-Spangled_Banner#Early_history_of_t..., the tune is powerful and the free/ brave part is also very good.

I personally think our lyrics need a tune-up, but they're pretty good too.

It will be interesting to see if there is a growth in popularity in curling post olympics???

cheers, thanks for the comment;)
