Miss phoenix posted about the scrap bag she made recently and it inspired me to make one! I made a pillow scrap sack. It was very quick and easy to make, I just used an old large pillow case and sewed in a long zipper from an old dress I'd recently cut up to make something else. I'd been needing more scrap storage but kept putting off making a scrap bag, and here it took me less than 10 minutes to make. voila!

Dynamom posted about a gift bag she made recently and it inspired me to make one! I made it out of a cereal box and covered it in newspaper. Punched holes in the sides and strung scrap thick ribbon through. Another thing that took me less than 10 minutes! I used it for one of Mercury Man's Valentine's Day presents:

Hooray!!
So easy, right?
I asked for old maps on freecycle and a lady not only had them but brought them to me since she was going to be near my neighborhood anyhow. They make great gift bags, too.

scraps are a constant

It seems like I can't use them fast enough! I hate throwing them out though, there is always something I can do with them. one of my flickr contacts made a huge quilt out of all her scraps, it's awesome. I might do something like that.

awesome!

good thinking on using the pillow case for the scrap bag, what a clever idea! i didn't even put a zipper in the scrap bag i made, partly because i'm nervous to try sewing a zipper. is it tricky? i could take the free zipper and button hole class at the sew and vac where i got my machine but i already figured out how to do button holes and they'd require that i buy a zipper foot from them. do i really need a zipper foot to do it, or can i do it with the basic foot my machine came with?

by the way, i love how you and motor have been referring to yourselves as cowboy seamstresses. it's so true; the stuff i make is far from technically correct, but i figure it all out eventually and make it work however i can, and the inspiration and creativity are what show the most. we certainly are cowboys (or cowgals) of the sewing machine. zippers are totally easy

the way I do them. I just hand sew them in. I use zippers from clothes I cut up usually so I make sure to cut enough cloth around the zipper so it's easy to sew it in whatever new item I'm making. Like I just sew the cloth around the zipper to the cloth of the new stuff. I making an item from scratch it's a little trickier because you want the zipper insertion to be invisible and the zipper to lay flat, but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy. don't bother with a class, there are many free tutorials on youtube! just do a search. here are a couple:
