google sucks. remember when you could search for shit in a particular area by plugging in "art supplies" and a zip code or county? yeah, it's all advertising now. anyone who shows in the search results is there because they paid to be. stores that are in fact open, and still exist and sell what you're looking for, are nowhere to be seen unless you already know their full name and search for it in quotes.

google sucks for a variety of reasons, but their lynchpin was the fact that they turned up usable search results. and now they don't.

I recently tried to find a bakery that sells Paczki, the glorious polish pastry that is only available each year until Ash Wednesday. I googled Paczki and my town, but only paid advertisements came up.

If any local bakeries are in business, they will surely be smothered by the fact that there is no such thing as a usable Yellow Pages any more, and Google puts the paying customers at the top of the pile.

Grrrrr.

Hope you find your art supplies.

i've had the same thing

with bakeries. and i'm talking about bakeries i know exist and i know where they are, i just can't recall the exact name, and STILL don't get any results. i get a directory of large chain supermarkets with bake departments in the tri-state area.

i did NOT find my art supplies. i went out driving to the towns i vaguely remembered there being art stores in. i found a vacant store in one spot, a pizzeria in another. i'm sure there must be more stores within a 40 mile radius than those, but i have no way of finding them now.

yelp?

maybe you could search on yelp.
Also, craigslist, as shitty as it is, if you ask a general question like that, someone might give an answer. Doesn't make google any less sucky.
