i am kicking sugar
thats the first step. I don't know how, I don't know what i should do, but I am going to try and do it. That and binge eating. Its not about weight but addiction. Last year, I went on a diet and lost 20 pounds. I now weigh 5 pounds more before I started. I ended up on some pretty strong drugs for anxiety, until I realized in retrospect that I had my crutch pulled out from under me, and emotionally, I just fell apart. I know I need therapy, but the money is just not there, so I am going to try to exercise logic and lower my carbs, and one of my ideas is cutting up a big tupperware of vegetables everyday and making myself finish them. I figure that all my body really needs is protein and vegetables and fruit. Pasta, bread all of that is just really not much of anything other than empty calories. Besides, I never eat 6 turkey sausages like I do pieces of pizza. I am just too old and this has been going on too long. I want to be healthy and I want to see where I am supposed to be, not a size 4 because i live on coffee and an occasional piece of junk food. Or a size 12/14 because I am going to start eating healthy on Monday, or New Years Eve,and that always means dieting so I am going to eat a bunch of toxic, addictive food. I want my eating habits to be sane and rational and healthful. But I don't know where to start...

Congratulations on improving your diet Momma! However, make sure you include some good whole grains in there. (Best to eat them in the morning). Otherwise you may fall into a depression. I have tried several times to cut carbs completely and it just doesn't seem to work. Women's brains need the chemicals provided by carbohydrates. My problem was that a. I was addicted and couldn't stop at just one and b. I didn't realize that a serving is only 1/2 cup of pasta
. My brother in law is diabetic and I have learned quite a bit about the healthy ways to handle carbs/sugar from him.

Complex carbs are not empty calories at all! Whole grains have tons of minerals, fiber, vitamins, and even protein in them. The problem with carbs is that people eat way too much of them, and they eat the destroyed (refined) versions.
IME it is hard to feel full and content without some complex carbs in your diet.

good job, you. feeding my body healthy, sane foods, listening to its needs and denying my urge to subsist entirely on coffee, cigarettes and beer is still rough for me - but it feels so good when i do.
one thing that really helps me with the eating healthy stuff is to find yummy recipes (online, in books, from my mama) and commit the time and energy to making them. also, educating myself on what is good food vs what is crapass food has been a huge help.
i'm sending you yummy happy food fairies - it's a huge step towards total self-love to even THINK about changing yer diet/exercise habits...yeah, mama.

don't fall behind in the grocery shopping or you will grab what's quick and easy.
oh and never eat late. it fucks with your blood sugar and makes you crave shit.
that said, i'm off to the store to grab some peppermint patties, my new favorite treat.
good luck.
You go woman! As someone who recently tried a diet overhaul i know its fucking hard but I found if you can get through one day you can get through two. Have no guilt if you give in because one day is a fuck of a lot better then never trying at all. I lasted three days on a completly raw diet. When I am ready I will try again. You will feel so much better off the sugar. Have you tried stevia? It takes a bit of getting used to the different taste but its sweet and better then splenda or some other chemical sweeteners that just hurt your body more. Your body is a temple. You are a intuitive being who can sense what her body and souyl need if you stop and listen. Sending you strong vibes mama.

By cutting out one thing at a time- get rid of the white sugar in your house, stop buying things with corn syrup, switch to honey-sweetened or try to use things like maple syrup or molasses to give your taste buds a chance to adjust. I've never gone completely NO sugar but I trained myself to give up pretty much everything other than honey and maple syrup or sometimes turbindo sugar on occasion. I'm not a soda person so that wasn't a problem- I like to be hardcore and not have sugar OR coconut milk in my coffee/tea lately- it makes me feel tough. I will drink my coffee with whiskey though every once in a while.
Super cacao chocolate- not the milk crap kind- is actually good for you, makes you happy- really- there is science to back me up- something about the choc chemicals, I dunno. And when I'm going to treat myself to something or I'm having a particularly shitty day or I'm stressed I eat some peppermint patties (Mme. Filth reminded me of this), but that is maybe once a month. Maybe I'll try to cut back even more- the great thing about getting used to less sugar is that after a little while, you really don't miss it- in fact, sugar makes me feel pretty sick now if I eat more than I'm used to.
One thought- don't overcook your pasta. It turns it to sugar. Read labels- look for corn syrup/sugar content.
I know that going vegan/vegetarian or cutting down meat consumption to maybe once a week- trying to buy only grass-fed meat- really helps.
I would NOT cut out carbs. That is too extreme. The Atkins thing had it's time- it's not a viable solution in the long term- because what happens when you get to where you want to be and you start eating carbs again? My brother was a medic and told me about having to ride rescue to a couple of folks who were passed out from the Atkins diet. I'll throw in a pitch for coconut milk vs. milk milk again- the saturated fat is awesome for you vs. artery clogging. The reason that so many diets don't work is that your body DOES need fat, carbs, etc- just get them from better sources. Eat whole foods, cut out processed if you can- or make them as little processed as possible. That's my advice. No carbs no sugar sounds too extreme to me- you are asking too much of your body- be patient with yourself. Fat on your belly is often related to stress- known as "stress-fat". Be focused but go easy on yourself- get healthier one day at a time, one thing at a time, or you run the risk of it backfiring and you feeling worse about it.
And beer is not good. I would only occasionally indulge in a really tasty microbrew. Good luck! You can do it- think of all the other things you've gotten through that are much more difficult than eating healthy! You're a rock star! Yahoooooo!
