Trapeze!
Hello mamas,
I promised I would tell about my trapeze class so here goes;
When I got to the studio it was actually static trapeze not flying as the instructor emphasises you aceiving safety and control through your own strength rather than just getting strapped onto stuff. We did a lot of warm ups, running and stretching and some ball games designed to wake up your brain. I was so excited i could not stop looking at the trapeze!
Me and another new guy then worked with an instructor, the trapeze was about 5 feet up and you basically gripped on, alowed the trapeze to take your weight, engage a little upward lift in the shoulders then you used your abdominals to lift your legs up and catch the bar with your feet. You then boosted upwards until you were in "hocks" with the back of your knees bent over the bar, you let go with your hands and swing!
Then you use your abdominals again to swing your body up and catch the ropes, "the velvets" with your hands. You straighten up and volia your seated!WE then progressed to some tricks, like standing!, the mermaid, the russian angel! I have to say it was amazing but exhausting, as the evning progressed it got harder and harder to get up there.
I was also limited in choice of tricks I could do as my hands did not have sufficient grip strength and were just too soft! The rope just ran through them. MY palms were ruby red and boiling hot by the end of the session. Apparently seasoning your hand is something that happens over time.
It is a compelling activity and addictive no matter how much it hurts you need to get up! Obviously though my hands and their sensitivity are extremly important too my job! I have been looking at gymnastic hand protectors and if I can make them work I will definitely continue,if not there is the option of doing silks work instead. I am going to give it a good try though!
The trapeze is so unyielding, it looks friendly but it doesn't help you at all, all the power comes from you and if you hesitate it is punishing BUT the feeling of satisfaction when you find a new point of stability and security in such an alien environment is electrifying. It is also very motivating fitness wise as I woke up this morning thinking what can I do to today improve my trapeze!
Bye ladies

Oh wow...it sounds so amazing! Did you take any pictures?
I was just thinking the other day about how much I feel like learning how to balance on a tightrope! I want the leather shoes- I've seen people in the summer in the park practicing with a large rope- that's so great that you live somewhere that there are trapeze lessons! I'd sell a little bit of my soul to get to learn and practice circus stuff..... I have an old friend out in Seattle who does aerial silks and trapeze..... I juggle. I'm double-jointed. The circus needs me- I've always known this. They just don't know it yet. That's great that you have that! I hope this circus stuff spreads like wildfire.....
I had an idea for integrative mind/body therapy the other day.....
Workshop titles:
Trapeze- Learning to Let Go (hehehe)
Tightrope- Finding Inner Balance
High Dive- Trusting Yourself
Aerial Silks- Unwind the Mind.......
I am serious. I think that it would be great- action of the body can help the mind follow.

OMG, so jealous! I really want to do silk works, but with the carpal tunnel issues I don't know that I'll ever be able to pull it off. Maybe some day! You go! SO much fun! Please continue to provide us with details so we can live vicariously through you!

for posting about it, it sounds so awesome. Thanks to your initial post I did stop saying 'someday' and actually looked into it! at first I thought I would have to go all the way to Chicago for a class (I live in northeast Ohio) but found a place in Columbus, which is about 2 hours away from me. Mercury Man and I will make a day trip out of it next month. I'm so excited about this!!!

that sounds like about the coolest thing ever to do!
(i would love to do that too) i can feel your excited energy about it; quite a workout too!
**Breathe**
you're officially the coolest mama here.
My Fire spinning doesn't even compare to this!

someday I want to do it!
you went flying through the air!
i had no idea how much core strength it would take to handle the trapeze, but after reading your description, it makes total sense!
i could feel the tension and soreness in your hands, as i read this powerful piece!
i love your writing style, by the way - not sure if i've ever mentioned to this to you before!
this would be considered a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for most folks, but i know you'll take second crack at it, sooner than expected!
all your gym time pays off in circumstances like this - totally unexpectedly! i love that part - this experience proves once and for all, how valuable regular exercise is! i can imagine that there must have been folks, if not in your class, somewhere along the line, who desperately wanted to try it and found out that they couldn't!
go team meds! you did it!
love and joy!

I think you are the coolest mama ever! Seriously. This is so awesome! I've always dreamed of doing rope and sash work, had two roommates in an old warehouse I lived in that used to practice/perform in our "livingroom" (the one with 30' ceilings!). So amazing!
