Whole Foods and my friendone of my dearest friends, who is drop dead gorgeous, eats extremly well and has a figure to die for, works at Whole Foods. Recently, they have taken to giving their employees a BMI measurement. Because my friend is not a tiny girl- and thats not politicaly correct for fat or even chubby, she is not entitled to get a 10% bonus off her groceries. I am so mad by this! After all, how many people do you know who can eat whatever they want and not gain a pound? Some of the most un-healthy individuals I have ever met in my life as far as what they put into their bodies ( especially men)are also the thinnest! Then we have other mamas on here over the years like our dear sweet outspoken Mercury who said one time such an inspiring statement I have to remind myself of about having thick thighs, " Hating myself for having thick thighs would be like hating myself for having two legs." I am just so saddened by this, and more-over so many things nowadays that are meant to attract earth crunchy, radical out of the box folks are nothing more that wolves in sheeps clothing. Really, I wish I had the discipline this woman has with how she treats her body, and I wouldn't mind the streamlined yet volumptous figure. Yes, i think about weight, I am okay with the fact that I don't mean societies standards, it intrigues me, and intrests me and repulses me. Besides, isn't there also a window of supposed overweight-ness that doesn't equate to any more of a risk? I wonder if they didn't hand out that cards to the ass-less wonder 18 year old boys who weigh 140 at 6 feet tall- did they get rewarded for being underweight? My friend is having a hard time even buying groceries these days...not to mention- how humiliating is that?

whole suck
I was dating a guy a while back who worked there (maybe he still does? I avoid the place like the plague!). You know when they charge such amazingly high prices for their food, yet their employees are eligible for food stamps....uh, time to start shopping somewhere else.
This BMI bullshit is just one more way that Ho' Fo' fcuks their employees up the ass.
You can get organic foods at the Grocery Outlet (aka the Gross Out, for those in the know)

that is so asinine
Wow. Mind boggling. Do you know if this is a single store policy or a regional or national program?

I don't know
its my friend who I wanted you to talk to. I know she was venting about it on FB, and then I was replying, and she sent me a PM saying that she took everything down because she was afraid that because some of her FB friends were managers at Whole Foods, she would be terminated...for complaining?
oh shit that sucks
Besides all these other valid reasons but to add insult to injury, many experts agree that BMI isn't even a good indicator of well, anything. A lot of body builders have high BMIs which would count them as obese but it's that their muscles are heavy...muscles, body type, etc. aren't taken into consideration.
I like "streamlined yet voluptuous" and am thinking of using that for myself
That's awful.
I haven't been a fan of Whole Foods since the CEO got smacked for posting on Yahoo investor forums under a pseudonym and trashing his competitors. He did it for seven years, in an attempt to bring down the value of his main competitor so that Whole Paycheck could buy them out. Nice ethics, dude.
I also don't like them because, IMO, their price points and marketing strategies have contributed to the idea that eating healthy is an option only available for the rich. Which is why I shop at other places - like Trader Joe's and Henry's and the local farmer's market.
But this BMI thing is a whole new low. Way to buy into bullshit beauty standards! I hear what you're saying - I've been a size 12 all my life, I work out regularly, I'm fit and I'm strong and I like the way my body looks. Yet I'd probably fail that BMI test too.

ick
Seriously, that doesn't seem like it's legal AT ALL. As well as just being really horrible of them. But I've known that Wh0le F00ds is pretty bad to their employees for a long time, serious union-busting. And of course this goes right along with the CEO's ridiculous statement about health care (just shop/eat food from Wh0le F00ds and you'll be healthy! won't need a doctor or subsidized health care!). Ick ick ick.
WHEN WHEN WHEN are we going to stop hearing about BMI?! It's such a load of crap.
is that even legal?
good god.
on the whole, whole foods is a beautiful example of herd/fad marketing. that BMI crap is such a load of unsubstantiated shit. it's all packaged, rebranded weight charts designed to feed this mass delusion that we have an obesity "epidemic" in this country, like it's a disease, and like we give it to ourselves, and like the cure is in buying the right products. it all feeds into the same weight loss industry that whole foods is part of. so, it makes sense they'd jump on that bandwagon, but using it as incentive for employees, it's like giving a discount for having the latest iphone. so what, they only pay 25% markup now? lucky skinny people.
yes, i did notice two scatological references in the same sentence, such is whole foods.

I discussed this with my
I discussed this with my friend, and yes they do give the discounts to below BMI individuals, nice huh?
well i should get in there
because i'm skinny, and i'd like to pay a mere $5.50 for a can of goddamn soup.

Are you seriously saying that
Are you seriously saying that they base their employee discount on the employee's BMI? Like, seriously?! I'm really having an insanely hard time believing that (not saying you're lying, I'm just having a hard time processing the stupidity of such a policy). I'm speechless. I mean, I can think of a ton of things to say about it, but my mind is so boggled that I don't think I can express any of it in a logical way right now. All I can say is that if that truly is their policy then I'm glad I don't have one of their stores near me to spend my money in. Ricockulous.
I know, right?
That sounds like a discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen.
