hey ladies
my baby girl had a gnarly diaper rash. we ended up getting a cream to fight off yeast infections and her rash is clearing up, but now i notice she has a white tonuge and i am thinking she is having a little bout of thrush. has anybody here tried gentian violet to fight thrush? how would i use it. i ordered some and it just came in to the health food store, i just dont know what to do with it.

I've never used it

You paint the affected surface with it, and it will dye whatever touches it a deep shade of blue.

Just a side note, I am interested that you were able to get it from a health food store. Despite its natural sounding name, it is not a naturally derived product. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it is a common misconception that gentian violet is an herbal product, but it is not, it is a chemical dye.

Here is a treatment guide from kellymom, and here is the wikipedia site with general info. I hate to link to Wikipedia, but when their site on gentian violet is more complete than the mayo clinic one, it's hard to argue with that.

I used it

Me and baby G had thrush when she was about two months old - for nearly two months. After trying the prescription stuff for a while, I switched to GV. I used it on my nipples, and put it on her tongue/inside her cheeks daily. The trick is to apply it very very lightly. A drop or two on a q-tip is plenty (my memory is rusty, but the idea is to get the affected area stained lightly blue - not dark purple - with the dye). Also, you have to be diligent. I think twice a day (am/pm) for at least a week. And try to apply after nursing/bottle or eating/drinking so it has the longest undisturbed contact time . . . If you go a little overboard at first, or accidentally stain something don't worry, the blue does fade within a day or two!

Oh, and sterilize any and all bottles and cups (boil for a few minutes). And no candy, fruit or juice for her for about ten days.

AND, finally, the thing that may have tipped us over the edge to beating the yeast was the probiotic Bifidus. I swabbed her mouth with it several times a day - between GV applications. (You can get it as a powder).

Good luck!
