What SHOULD I have said?
At the car dealership to the leathery old guy who as I'm settling into the seat to check out a van says, "So...are you in charge of making this decision all by yourself?"
I think I just dropped my jaw at him and said, "If I choose to I am" and left...but it's bugging me. Give me some comebacks!

i would have said "all by myself!" like a three year old. although it would have been funnier to say something like i have to ask my mommy first.
.
you're not buying from him, are you? getting a new sales person is quite a message in it's own right. in the same dealership so he and his supervisor sees you do it.
come out
you executed the best one, by far. Walking out. Oh, you could call the manager of that place after you buy another car, and tell her/him why you went elsewhere. Or you could shit-talk 'em on yelp or your local feminist/parenting board....

something like, "no, silly! of course i will first consult the family of mice that live in my underwear drawer, they make fail proof decisions for me on a daily basis."

I'm terrible in these situations. But after 12 hours of thinking about it, how about:
"Are you in charge of making this sale all by yourself? Because that's not a very good start."
