wtf is wrong with Bear's hiney?!(pics)
Bear has got this rash thing on his bum and I can't figure out what it is or what to do about it. At first, I thought it was yeast, because he had a bad yeast infection when he was about 2 weeks old, only this time it wasn't all bumpy. I was using the same diaper balm I always had..a natural one with some good oils, calendula and a few other things, but this time, it didn't make it go away.
When I took Bear out of the diaper service diapers and put him back in my wash-your-owns, the rash went away. As soon as I put him back into a diaper service one, he looked like he was wearing red shorts after one diaper change. The Service said nothing had changed, so I ended up cancelling and put Bear back into wash-your-owns. I have put him in disposables a few times which also make his rash flare up (eco friendly chlorine free ones, pampers AND huggies).
When i was still thinking it was yeast, I cut any and all refined sugar from my diet (i eat mainly raw, but I still do love the occasional baked sweet treat!). That helped for about a week, and then the rash came back. i started giving Bear probiotics, but they didn't help. I put probiotic paste on his bum to no avail. I even resorted to using the cream the midwife had prescribed me for his bum when he was itty bitty, which dried the rash up into big red scabs.
So i researched diaper rashes in one of my books, and it talked about what eczema is like, which is what this could be, since it is blotchy and scaly. It's like he has really dry skin on his bum. So I started moisturizing his rear end like mad, ising seabuckthorn seed oil (which is great for any skin condition) and coconut oil. Somethimes they help and sometimes they dont. Calendula makes it go away, and sometimes not. I have given him homeopathic sulfur and it didn't help. Right now, I am giving him flax oil and probiotics every day, but I can't tell if its helping at all.
This rash comes and goes. over the course of one diaper, it will move. Sometimes its big red blotches, sometimes they're small. Sometimes his bum is perfectly clear. I really can't figure this one out. It doesnt seem to bug him or hurt him. Sometimes he scratches at his bum a bit, but never at the red spots. He wears no diaper around the house, so he gets at least a few hours a day diaperless. He hates having a diaper put on and that is often a big fight unless he's really into some toy or the silly faces I make, but I figure thats probably just because he's 10 months old and doesnt want to wear a diaper...
Anyone have any suggestions? I should probably take him to a naturopath if nothing works soon...

but we know of a kid who recently had rectal strep...everyone around here was getting strep throat big time (and apparently this is a popular time of the year for it) but this one kid got rectal strep, which I've never heard of before. So I'm just throwin' it out there.
that sounds like it would bite ass. I hope bear hasn't got that!
I've read some stuff about mineral and detergent build up on cloth diapers causing rashes. Maybe you should try stripping your diapers?
wwwpjhd? What would pj harvey do?

an awful lot like my daughter's ass. but, her rash didn't move. when it moves, is the part that had been this red and scaly back to perfectly normal?
well you can take or leave what happened with my daughter, because i can't tell if its the same or not.
it would get red like this, and i would have to keep her out of diapers entirely until it healed. there was no type of diaper that was totally safe from causing a reaction. but before it got that bad and it was just red, i could prevent it being flared up by air drying her about an hour before putting another diaper on.
it did not itch, but it did bother her to have it touched.
my daughter's rash did not move. it would be in the same spot till i healed, sometimes spread, but i would never take a diaper off six hours later to find the spot that was horribly red and raw perfectly fine, that never happened. it healed slowly and spread or didn't spread.
much later, well after diapers, we saw a dermatologist for something else, who said she had eczema. i blew it off because it didn't look like eczema to me. the same doctor also said i have eczema. i have only had one patch of dry skin in my life, so i doubted this too.
at ten years old, my daughter's skin is unbelievably dry. it gets red and bumpy if you wash it in too-warm water or use harsh chemicals. the only soaps she can use are Kiss My Face and natural glycerine. she reacts to most chemical fragrances. this is consistent with what the dermatologist told me about eczema. if i put lotion on it, it's soaked up within seconds.
so, i don't know if it's the same thing or not, i'm thinking not because it doesn't move. but, there was no intervention, just getting her toilet trained as soon as humanly possible, to save her skin. which, by the way, is flawless on her ass now. i was worried it'd scar but it didn't.
poor little bear's bum! but its still cute! my guess is that its not eczema. eczema [typically] does not affect the diaper area because of the amount of moisture always surrounding it. bella was COVERED FROM HEAD TO TOE with eczema, except her diaper area, so i know this from experience and was told by three different doctors the same thing. are you or him eating a lot of fruit? or drinking a lot of juices, squeezed or from a juicer? some of the high acidic fruits, even apples, can cause diaper rashes. i hope someone has the right answer because OMG, you have done so much for him. i know you are really having a hard time with this. i'm so happy that he isn't appearing to be bothered by it, though. sending vibes out to )))))heal bear's baby bum((((((.
Whenever we get this kind of rash (not often) it is almost always because the skin is in contact with something acidic. I would guess there is either something already on your diapers (before you put them on) or more likely in his pee that is causing the rash. You might need to use a water-barrier cream, like Weleda's diaper cream to help it clear up. By the way, our ND says that if the baby is having an external reaction to something like that (from their pee), chances are it's irritating their intestines too. A really common one that sets off my girls is apple pectin - in raw apples, but not so much in cooked ones. And of course tomatoes (raw and cooked), kiwis, strawberries and oranges . . .
Oh, and I agree, it doesn't look like the yeast or eczema rashes we get around here.
good luck! I hope you figure it out soon.
What do you wash with? I had to go to dye-free, fragrance free soap with my guy. I suspect you already use something like this, but its worth mentioning. Also- the rash needs moisture. Lots of it. Not just when its dry but right after bath when its wet to seal it in. And yes, I'd let him air it out too. Are you warming up there yet? Might be a touch of heat sensitivity too. It WILL go away and he WILL be fine but hooo-ee it's tough waiting it out.
Maybe? Hives move around.
