Good Day, Sunshine

After six days of writing about eleven pages per day, I am now the proud mama of a new television series. Yay, me! After I resumed my full medication regimen and started feeling human again, I sort of went on a tear to crank out my script for submission this television staffing season.

It feels terrific, although toward the end of the push I was not really able to hold a conversation or bathe lest the creative juices go on walkabout. Nonetheless, I have had this script cooking in my brain for two years now so it was about time to put it on paper.

And no sooner had I sent it out for a first read did I get word that the producer of the feature film I want to pitch actually wants to hear my pitch... tomorrow. Gulp.

In other matters, my shrink reluctantly prescribed me Tegretol instead of Lithium as my preconception mood stabilizer. She made me sign off that she had explained all the risks associated with the use of the drug, but I feel confident in this choice over staying on Lithium, due to the research and recommendations I've found. She also made me swear to stop it as soon as I confirm a pregnancy, which I assured her was still the plan. Honestly, would she rather prescribe me the meds or have me hospitalized? It is not a crime to take medication that I require in order to function safely and healthily.

As usual, LA has sort of skipped spring after some paltry showers and moved on to full-blown summer - which is always fine by me. I'm looking forward to a weekend in the Bay Area, however, visiting family and friends and preparing for our June 7th wedding in Santa Cruz. Especially stoked to see my niece on her birthday since we put together a cool gift for her 3rd year... an idea box with cards inside containing prompts for imaginary play. Hope she has as much fun playing with it as we did making it.

It Went... You Know...

I knocked the pitch outta the park. Too bad the producer wasn't even close to the playing field. He didn't know the source material very well, or the genre, or the target market, so basically I was over prepared to the point where it just kind of got humiliating. He called the next day to tell me he lost control of the project. Go figure.

can you take it elsewhere?

Yes and No

The feature pitch was based on a property that the producer who asked me to pitch to him owned - so no. I could take it elsewhere once that producer loses control of his option and it becomes an open writing assignment at a studio, but that could be a while and all the players will have shifted by then, as will have the market, so who knows if it would be worth anything at that point.

The television series is undergoing a huge rewrite that will be done on Monday, and that property I own and my representation will use it to submit me for television staffing opportunities for the upcoming pilot season, in addition to pushing it as a sale during development season in the fall. Plus I will use it as a sample to submit to all the network writing fellowships that are due this spring. Much work lays ahead for me on this one, because it will have multiple purposes as you can see. Not only that, but it's important to have a current writing spec of your finest caliber in your back pocket because you never know who will ask you for it and you want to be prepared with material that's polished.

I've found that it pays to keep a distance from your creative children and to know when to let go and when to hold on for dear life. I also think that as in life, the integrity of my experiences becomes integrated into who I am, so it goes with writing - every story I create informs the next one I tell. Perhaps one day the stars will align and someone will think one of my stories is worth telling because others will want to listen. That's what ultimately makes this work satisfying and humbling all at once.
