Yes! I am so stoked to be figuring this out about 10 minutes before I graduate. I keep writing papers and it seems that I keep getting worse at the whole process. I keep phoning in my work and feeling uninspired to write papers. I love the reading and discussion, but not the whole
"thesis statement" opening paragraph blah blah blah.

Really, I would love a degree in funnel cake folklore if it meant that I could finally have my b.a.

i feel you

mt first bachelor's was in fine art, took almost six years, and served me in NO WAY other than well, making me a pretty good artist who waited tables for almost ten years. my parents, who never fucked with me about being an art major, eventually got the "you should have kicked me in the ass!" shit from me!
so, i got another bachelor's and then a master's in what i really finally decided i wanted to do, and it is all good.
no education is a waste, and in today's world, a bachelor's degree really is the equivalent of what a high school diploma used to be, in that it matters less where you went or what you majored in, but like you said, that you HAVE the damn thing.
many vibes to you in getting finished with it mama!

I feel this pressure to hurry up and get on with it, because we have all these kids and bills and dreams and stuff...

I dunno, my plan is to rally, stop beating myself for being over English, and finish this degree this year, and get a job.

Thanks for the support!

I really want the degree. I feel like I worked so hard thus far, and never even thought I would make it this far. I have got to suck it up and just churn out some more papers!!

recovering english major.

I think much of your frustration is very typical at the end of ANY degree. You reach a point where it does seem endless and fruitless and non-worthwhile. BUT: you are at the end. You're doing that major because you love literature. You adore discussing it!
Are you planning on doing graduate work?
I started graduate school to continue in the English academia.. but ended up selecting another grad program, and I'm now a librarian. I hated grad. English, for pretty much the same reasons you mentioned.
There are many directions you can go with your English degree; many other programs love us because they know we can write and communicate (and that we have an extremely high pain tolerance.. like a packhorse, really).
Good luck, keep your (cliched) eyes on the prize, woman! You're almost done. And you'll never have to write another paper (unless you WANT to!)!

I have thought about grad school, but I just don't know. At this point we are a 4 kid/2 adult 1 income household, and I really am ready to get a job. We are putting off buying a new house (one that is big enough for us all) until I get finished with school or at least to a point where I can work.

I do love the reading and discussion. I am actually a creative writing concentration, and I do really well in those kind of classes. Thanks for the encouraging words.

What do I plan on doing with my english degree??

LOL, that's a really good question. I wish I had a good answer, or even a bad one at this point.

What is becoming apparent to me is that I need to sit down and really think about where I want to go in life. What do I really want to do. Am I hating English, or am I just afraid of moving forward, to used to the safety of school?

Anyhoo, I guess I got all deep waters there for a second.

And congrats on getting your degree!

thanks

It's a business degree, and it has helped me get jobs I wouldn't have had just because I had that paper, and helped me in my own business, so it's cool. I am back in school though (just one class this semester and online), to get prepped to get a grad degree in physics. This will be another prolly over a decade's worth of slow progress till I get my doctorate, and by then my kids will be all grown and I can teach and do research full-time.

an english degree is so versatile, you have many options!

But with an English major....

You can secretly giggle and feel like an insider in a special club whenever A Prarie Home Companion comes on. I dunno what you'll do with it, but it's a degree right? Can't be that bad. Maybe a stepping stone to your dream ajob?

"but it's a degree,

"but it's a degree, right?"

is my mantra right now. I just keep telling myself to stop being whiney and be happy that I will have that piece of paper soon!

I think I meant to get into something more social worky--like helping young moms, like I once was, get their shiz together in a meaningful way beyond what state aid is capable or willing to do. Maybe I can use my English skills to whip up a grant to get something like that funded.
