Should I use a neti pot?
I bought one awhile ago while I was sick, but haven't used it. I am quitting smoking, and thinking that will help me clean out, and good preventative for getting sick...but it's still all packaged and I just...don't want to. Is it worth snorting water up my nose?

There is no snorting. It is tilting and flushing. Go check out one of the many amusing youtube videos.
It takes a little getting used to, but they are pretty fantastic.

Do it.
A fellow faculty member here has done quite a bit of research on sinus rinses, and it's been proven to be very effective. The first time feels a little weird, but it's totally worth it. Here's a website with instructions and a video demonstrating the use:

And congrats on quitting smoking!
And one real doctor. But, I love it when we agree! And double congrats on quitting. Whatever can help is a good thing.

Granted, the first time I tried to use it, I was completely stuffed up, so there probably wasn't anywhere for the water to go but down the back of my throat...having said that, it was pretty unpleasant. However, it would probably be a good idea for me to check out the videos and just suck it up and use it, because I have it. And it probably is a good thing.

i can't use it when i'm actively sick. i can use it when i'm coming down with a cold, or in that afterward phase where my body is trying to expel the mucous. but while i am in the throes of a real cold and my sinuses are packed, i find it painful to use. i love the neti pot, under those circumstances. i also warm the water. i don't remember if the instructions actually say to do that.
the mr however, has serious sinus problems and loves using it when he's sick. he's got a whole sinus clearing regime that involves the neti pot and a hot shower.
but they're so popular now, that they're in regular drug stores, when i had to get mine at a co op. so there must be something to it, if so many people are getting them now.
another thing i like is those breathe-r*ght strips.
Mt 12 yr old loves the neti pot to the point where I have to hide it or he will neti pot like 5000 times in a day.
!
that comment is right below mine, so I thought maybe?
But if so, then it's just that my kid is a nut.
There's something about pouring water in his nose that he likes. The first weekend he got one he used it all weekend and whenever anyone would come over he would be like
"hey, come watch me neti pot"
and eventually I hide to hide it because he was even admitting that it was making his nose feel weird.
like I said, my kid is a nut, although I'm sure the nut didn't fall far from the tree...
usually 13yo boys are obsessed with another bodily function. Not to be crass. It just cracked me up, picturing a 13yo with an akternative "wholesome" (if not weird) obsession like the neti pot!
Here's my advice for a novice: Always use warm water - cold water will make you feel more stuffy. Add 1/4 tsp salt to the pot and mix well - it shouldn't sting at all. If it does than you probably used too much/too little salt. It takes some practice to get the head tilt just right. Get creative. Also, don't blow your nose too hard right after, give it some time and blow gently - sinus tissue is delicate stuff! Ultimately it should feel like a really simple rinse - in one side out the other, not like you're filling Lake Powell. Good luck.
