So it seems that the government is trying to push their responsibilities off on the toy companies to stop harmful materials from reaching America's children under 12 (i.e., Thomas the Lead Paint Engine). This seems like a reasonable solution considering the recession, our tremendous deficit, and that poor one guy who now inspects all the imported toys. Yet it spreads beyond the apparent answer. ANYONE making toys and selling them to the sub-12 set will have to pay thousands of dollars to have a third party inspect their goods. This includes all those wonderful toys on Etsy and Big Cartel(here is Etsy's reaction: http://etsynews.com/824/etsy-addresses-new-cpsia-consumer-product-safety...).

We can work to change this law:

Let's support independent toy makers of the world!

And apparently it will reach

And apparently it will reach much farther than just toys. From what I've read and heard, this will include clothing and other things as well.

you're right

"Anyone who produces or sells any of the following new or used items will be required to comply with the law: toys, books, clothing, art, educational supplies, materials for the learning disabled, bicycles, and more."

Crazy, huh? Sounds like they are trying to kill small business.

What I find disturbing

is peoples general lack of enthusiasm about this bill. I have heard a lot of blind blanket statement "good, we don't want lead in kids toys" BS.

If you do not have a relative or friend who will make you homemade stuff for free, plan on buying all your stuff at a big box store FOREVER. The small natural (LOCAL) kids stores will probably be out of business.

On the other side, I am hearing from small manufacturers.."I am going to label all my products with 'not intended for kids under the age of 13', and will keep selling." So how effective will it really be?

Sheesh.

what is bothersome about

what is bothersome about this approach is the amount of falsehood that will be involved with something meant to improve life. what type of country is america that you have to lie about toys and baby shoes? i am worried for the nation. this is a bad sign.

I've been hearing a lot

I've been hearing a lot about this because the owners of a wonderful local, natural toy/clothing store here have started the Handmade Toy Alliance.

This is where my libertarian streak comes a-knocking. I do believe that the government should look out for the safety of children but CPSIA misses the boat as far as small businesses are concerned. It seems relatively easy to make an exception for small businesses. arrrgghhh. I really hope we can get this changed or so many wonderful toy/clothing companies will be &(*&$-outta luck.

what is terrible is that

what is terrible is that china and other countries that are making these contaminated products should be held accountable. you know that they have the means of making safe products because they manufacture them for european markets. i heard on npr that some factories are divided into separate divisions: things for america, things for europe. european countries demand safe toys, america is afraid to stand up to the big dragon because we owe them lots and lots of money. it is a very bad place to be.
