Kindergarten Poll
Just curious...
1. Where you live is public kindergarten full day or half day?
2. If it is full day, do you pay?
3. If it is half day, how many hours is your child/ren in school?
I'm curious because my school district only offers half day kindergarten, which is 2 hours and 30 mins. Full day is available, but there is a cost and it is done on a lottery system and there are only 2 full day classes. I think this policy is ridiculous and I'm in the process of writing a letter to the local newspaper for the editorial section. Just trying to get some ideas what is typical around the country. Thanks, mamas and hope you're having a lovely day.

Kindergarten is full day. But as the 'office lady' told us when we signed our daughter up in '03, we also offer half days, but strangely, no one takes us up on that.

Some IPS schools are better than others, ours is a magnet, so its super awesome and we love it. It is proof that Public School systems can be great. Emmet goes 9-3:50

Free, only partially offered. It's guaranteed your kid can get half-day kindergarten, but all day there is only one class and when it's full, it's full. That's because kindergarten is still 'optional' I think...like by law you only have to educate kids between the ages of 6 and 16, so since kindergarten is optional and generally age 5 starting age they don't have to offer full-day like with grades 1-8, high school.

1.All day
2. Nope. Up until 3 years ago, there was the option of either half(free) or full(being paid by parents) but since there is no longer the choice, payment has been dropped altogether.
are like what you're describing, offering both half day K and full day K. they were trying to charge for the full day students this year but the parents were not happy with it, esp since they didn't inform them of that change until the classroom placements were already set. my friend was interviewed in the local paper about it, since she was one of the parents being billed for her son's full day placement. not sure what happened though...
MWF 8-2:40 (with naptime)
T,TH 8- 1:35 (no nap)
It's part of the L.A. unified school district, but we are a Charter school so I do know that not all schools have the same schedule. That said, I have not eard anything about paying? We do have a lottery, but it's to get in from another area and only so many spaces available each year.
