I was up all night with A, she was complaining her cheek hurt then I took a look in her ear and sure enough, all red and pussy. I am so sick of going to the dr with my other child and am a bit disenchanted with the whole medical establishment right now. Nevermind the fact that the amount of money we have spent in L's medications and copays make me sick. I'm wondering if any of you fantastic mamas can recommend an alternative to antibiotics. I'm going to do a search, too, but I trust you ladies before anyone else! Thanks and have a great Thursday.

found something...

Interesting...I may try the drops we have at home first. My pediatrician is a super cool woman and respects my natural standpoint, so I'll give her a call first, just to be on the safe side.

We use Avena Botanicals ear drops

They have worked well for myself (I used to get an ear infection every time I got a cold . . .) And I used them on L recently and she stopped complaining (about the pain) after two rounds of drops. You have to order them from Avena's online site probably, but they are made right here in Maine by this awesome, very reputable and nationally well-respected herbalist. They are worth having around the house for next time.

medical bills

I don't know about homeopathic alternatives for ear infections, but your medical bill woes reminded me of the year we had A. We spent so much on medical bills that year, we actually got a tax break....it might be worth it to keep the receipts and records and see if you can't get a little help during tax season.

I just read your other post, too, that sounds rough and lonely. We had the same issues with DHs old job. He missed us terribly, but I couldn't help but resent his "alone" time, even his hellish commute, as I was 'stuck' at home with the ladies. Maybe some puddle jumping today will led off a little steam. Hugs, mama.

Thanks, KJ, I appreciate

Thanks, KJ, I appreciate your support. The drops seemed to have done the trick. I wish the rain would stop so we could go puddle jumping...it is so windy and cold.

hey holly

It's friday so I'm a bit late on this but I have successfully used garlic oil on Devon's earaches twice now. What I did was heat a crushed garlic clove in a little olive oil until it was warm then I strained out the garlic. I put 3 or 4 drops of the oil in the hurting ear and made Devon tilt his head to keep the oil in--for about 5 minutes or so. I treated it 3 or 4 times during the day and he said his ear felt better the next day. Admittedly he had no fever or extreme pain just an achey feeling but hey, I didn't have to use antibiotics so I was happy.

In Chinese medicine -

They recognize that children's digestive systems are not fully developed. The Stomach Channel and Intestines connects into the ear, and so when there are problems with digestion, kids tend to get ear infections. The idea is that we want to make sure not to put any raw food or cold food into the Stomach's of children, because this can destroy their digestive fire, resulting in stagnation that backs up into the ear canal and festers. Antibiotics are considered to be extremely cold in Chinese medicine, and so putting these into a child's already damaged immune system will result in continued ear infections (as Western medicine has already proved in multiple studies).

So, what do you do? Work with the digestive system. There are a couple of great remedies I would recommend first:
Two great kid's formulas are:

1) Golden Flower Children's Ear Formula Liquid
and
2) Blue Poppy Bupleurum and Angelica Liquid

The problem is getting one of these without a prescription from a licensed practitioner. A couple of places sell the Golden Flower, and you could buy it here. The picture shows a bottle of granules, but it is the correct liquid formula. The dosage is on the bottle.

The Blue Poppy can only be sold to practitioners - but if you call any acupuncturist in town, or herbal medicinary, they should have it and you can just buy it from them. Usually if you call and ask for either of these products by name, they will just sell them to you.

The other option would be to take her in to the Chinese medicine doctor and have them do a quick evaluation - kids are usually cheaper, but I'm sure you could finagle something for 30 bucks and then they can prescribe an herbal formula to help her and they would probably put some ear seeds in too.

It's important for kids, especially when they are having ear infections, that you don't give them any raw food or any cold food/drinks. Everything should be at least room temperature. This will make sure that their digestive fire isn't taxed, and if the Stomach can handle what is taken in without getting swamped down, it has the power to kill off what is causing the ear infection in the first place.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for writing this. I love it when my own personal quirky beliefs about kids/food/sickness are confirmed by real medicine!

Yeah - it's hard not to feed kids raw/cold foods in our culture

and I struggle with it, especially when DS has to bring a lunch to school that goes straight into the fridge and comes straight out of it. I warm some of the foods up with spices (like cardamom, chili powder, etc) for school, because I can't do anything else about it yet. Still trying to figure it all out.
