Women & the Economy

Things are looking pretty dire in the economy. It seems like women caught on to what this might mean for us earlier than men did (poll released by The National Women's Law Center and Peter D. Hart Research Associates, Inc.). As early as July of 2008, 59% of women were looking ahead to the next five years and saying they are more worried and concerned about being able to achieve their economic and financial goals than they are hopeful and confident, as compared to 46% of men. According to a report by the American Psychological Association cited by CNN, the poll released by the National Women's Law Center is backed up, with the APA report, "The declining state of the nation's economy is taking a physical and emotional toll on people nationwide, and it is women who are bearing the brunt of financial stress."

And not only is there a downturn in the stock market, behind the sputtering down ward spiral is the credit freeze. How the credit freeze affects us is explained by the Joint Economic Committee of the Senate. From the same people who also find that women are increasingly vulnerable to job loss during a recession.

thanks for posting this

It's illuminating to have statistics and hard data to back up what a lot of us have already experienced. I had to laugh at this "no shit!" statement from the APA: "The declining state of the nation's economy is taking a physical and emotional toll on people nationwide, and it is women who are bearing the brunt of financial stress." Uh, yep, pretty much sums up my experience.

We just got the email that there will be no cost of living increases across the board for (female dominated) rank and file staff this year. No performance based raises either.

But there has been a huge push for increases in salaries for (male-dominated) leadership track roles, as naturally, attracting talent in that arena is very important.

Wow...glad I'm not the only one.

We did get a small cost of living increase, but it was pretty much eaten up with our increased healthcare costs (funny, working for a health system.) And yeah, the "professional" medical staff (a.k.a doctors, because nursing department managers and such aren't professional at all, of course) get real raises, 'cause we gotta keep those boys around. Mmmhmm. Pretty fucking rediculous.

Yeah, I was thinking about

Yeah, I was thinking about stuff & started wondering how this economic shift was going to hit women & everything I found really illuminated the disparity between men and women, non-familied & familied (whether that's children, sick, or elderly parents requiring care). I thought the breakdowns into exact cost on some of these was also really enlightening. When I have more time, I'd like to go back and read more from both The National Women's Law Center & the Joint Economics Committee. I was really surprised at how almost radical some of the Joint Economics Committee recommendations sounded to my ears (and I tend to lean that way) -- it such a relief to get the validation that my suspicions about how varying things will & do affect us.
