Okay, so I admittedly don't know too much about her but from the information I've been able to research she is not very experienced. The obvious aspect of her selection is that she is a woman.

I just want to get out my response to that one aspect.

#1 - Her selection is an obvious and distasteful attempt to gain women voters (some who had been in support of Hillary). And that says only that McCain and the Republican party views women as fungible and that their individual characteristics and abilities are unimportant and that one woman is as good as another.

#2 - The fact that this particular woman has a family with very young and dependent children makes me nervous that her circumstance will set the women's movement back by providing examples of all of the stereotypes used historically as arguments against women as leaders asd relating to their role as mothers.

Having said this I want to disclaim that I've written this with DS pulling on my arm to head out to the beach. So it may not be perfectly coherent. My apologies.

I am so irritated with that man right now.

I agree with everything you said. Also, I think it's a dig on the age thing, since she's three years YOUNGER than Obama. McCain is trying to average out and compensate for his own age, I think.

This choice just seems rash and made for all the wrong reasons, and what makes me sadder is that I doubt the folks who support him are going to see that, or care. I'm scared he'll start syphoning off the young vote, the women's vote, etc. That's probably exactly why he chose her--and people in the US make me mad because it will probably work!

I agree about the pandering

I agree about the pandering and the whole idea that Hillary supporters will just swap Clinton for Palin---insinuating that not only do they perceive us as all the same, but also that we are too stupid to realize that this is what they are doing.
Also, I read on a celebrity gossip site, okay okay, I read it on Perez Hilton, that Palin has voted anti-choice and anti-gay in the past. Don't know if that's accurate, but something to investigate.

Oh she's definitely Anti-Choice

and "a devout christian" which we know translates to anti-gay as well.

what gets me, too, is the unabashed hypocrisy

of a party that has held the line that women who have money AND babies should do nothing other than stay home and care for said babies is putting a woman with a FOUR MONTH OLD on a presidential ticket!

plus, maybe this makes me an ageist fuck, but why do white men get to run for president at ages beyond those at which everyone else is "urged to retire"?!

A four month old with Downs

A four month old with Downs Syndrome that they are using to show her anti-choice stance with. Look she kept her baby even though she knew it had DS...

Actually heard that on talk radio this morning.

me too

I shamefully check that site too... did you read about the scandal that she is already involved in? it has to do with her firing a state police chief because he was her ex-brother in law and owed child support or some shit.

What the hell? this woman has 5 kids and a new baby with downs - who will be raising her kids? is that a wholesome, republican ideal - giving your young children in need of their mother to strangers to raise cause you've got much important things to do? duh - it's easy to be anti-choice when you've got a full time nanny. we could all be baby factories and still run for vice president.

I am only just learning about the candidates, but I can't stand the political game. FIL is old friends with mccain so I'm sure he will vote for him, but MIL (who knows him too) won't vote for him, so that tells me something.

please universe, let obama win...

Yeah, I saw that skeletons

Yeah, I saw that skeletons come tumbling out post!
My DP heard her speak at some mixed audience event and she totally called upon Hillary supporters, and she got boo'd.
I'm really frightened of this Mcain/Palin ticket.

I think camp McCain saw

I think camp McCain saw Obama's speech last night and panicked. I think it is so gross that republicans think women are interchangeable.
You know what? I do think I'm going to see a female president in my lifetime. I really, really, don't think it should be Palin. I hope the decision hugely backfires.

I hope so, too. I'm

I hope so, too. I'm surprised he didn't cater more to the religious vote.

Side note: Her kids names seem so...unrepublican, to me. Trig, Treck (?), Bristol, Willow, and Piper...those names are about as crunchy as a person gets!

HOW ON EARTH can a person go from completely uninvolved in politics fifteen years ago to being A VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD?!

I'm shutting up. I'm so irritated.

right

I think the religious vote might FREAK OUT about a female VP. I think he would have had more success with Rice. I'm trying to find out more about Palin (aside from the fact that she aproves of ANWAR drilling - ugh) but she's totally off the radar. McCain also just lost his "Obama isn't experienced" argument.

I thought the same thing at first...

...until I heard someone on CNN say with a straight face that her role will be, and I quote "to be the pitbull to attack Obama on experience!" You know the right's game of playing the Emperor's New Clothes...ugh.

Not to mention...

That he is not a young man - if they got elected she could easily become the president of one of the most powerful countries in the world!

From what I have heard and

From what I have heard and read today she is as anti-woman as you can get. She is so outspokenly against choice and that is one of her main goals as the VP, to overturn Roe VS Wade. I am really scared of these two getting into office.

so with you

What amazes me is that we live in the 1 country where her nomination is not just totally dismissed as a joke. Because someone who is " hockey mom" with a few years experience as a mayor in a small Alaskan town and then governor of Alaska...c'mon- to lead the free world? JOKE. Like they picked someone up at the gas station who looked like a church lady and decided to put her up there, practically. Honestly, I would be a better choice! No kidding! And many of you! Such tokenism and playing to the most undiscerning level of ignorance. THen she stole Michelle Obama's punchline w/ the nod to Hilary and after such crap thrown at Hilary by the Republicans they are now going to say, "Oh if you like her, come to us."" ???? It's just grotesque to me, so dishonest. The good news is she is such an unlikely candidate I just don't think it will work. Unless the election is fixed by big business and the religious right. And frankly, as a therapist working w/ spec needs kids, Down's is a VERY complicated disorder which esp. the first few years of life has many medical risks- why would a mom of a 4 mo old consider this? I feel for the baby! So she's right to life but what about the quality of life for that little girl, who is so at risk? Do you think she feels held/nursed/protected?? This is controversial to say, but even in the Supreme Mommy level they are going to push- I"nm not buying her.

Oh well. TO much wine. Sorry.

I'm sure she has FT help/nurses/nannies for this kid

You would have to. Of course not the same as having her around but I can't imagine with the resources that she must have that she would do without 24 hour help.

I agree, though, the woman is freaky.

My mom (who is from Alaska)

My mom (who is from Alaska) is really saddened that this woman is letting herself be the pawn of the Republicans, because this is really going to backfire on her and McCain, like when she has to debate Joe B. for example, I think he might tear her apart.

Except that he is going to have to

play it carefully so as to not look like a big bully. Which is INSANE but true - you know people watching who want to support the REpub will be talking the next day not about her total lack of knowledge on the subjects but instead about how he was too harsh or something like that...if I were him I'd preface the debate saying "Look, this is important shit & I"m not trying to be a builly but I'm not goign to take it easy b/c this is real and needs to be addressed." (NOt that it would do much good.)

obama has blood in his eye

the debates are going to be fire, and I don't think he or biden will hold back. I think a lot of people will be surprised at his intensity...people mistake his niceness for non-assertiveness. He is a master for exposing flaws and sticking to the point without personal attacks. I have learned a great deal about effective communication from watching obama during this campaign.

Total tokenism. No man

Total tokenism. No man would have ever gotten VP nomination based on that lack of experience.

*Completely* appalling.

Yup. Completely agree.

But do you want to know my first response? No one can be a Republican with these children names, which i happen to love by the way.

Bristol,Track,Willow, Piper and Trig

It makes me want to know more about her and how she got involved with the 'others'. Haha!

some random humor--

here's a comment i saw on jezebel about this: "i was so excited when i saw pictures of maccain with his new running mate, until i realized i was mistaking her for liz lemon. now i'm disappointed. liz lemon would make a much better VP, nobody would ever go hungry, that's for sure." haha! this cracks me up because the first time i saw a picture of sara palin with mccain i seriously thought "why would he choos tina fey as his running mate!?"

i'm wondering,

now that this whole train wreck has started to sink in with everyone, what do you think is scarier?? the fact that palin is being blatantly used as a pawn in mccain's campaign, the possibility that palin is too stupid to realize that she's being used as a pawn, or the possibility that she knows she's being used and not only doesn't care, but is going along with it because she thinks it's a good idea???

all of the above

And it scares me because I have talked to conservatives, and they are taking it hook, line and sinker. She is wholesome, she is wonderful, she will appeal to the midwestern moms. She is more religious than Huckabee with less experience. She supports teaching creationism in schools. Blarf.
