okay, I give in... looking for an american girl doll

I have to just accept that my kids aren't going to be just like me in my likes/dislikes. I need to just say that I really don't like toys like american girl dolls - you know, the blond hair blue eyed dolls (I know there are others) that cost over $100 and only the kids whose parents have money get to own them. Well, my girl wants one so bad and I have decided to find a way to get her one. What can I say, she is my only little girl... So, I've been checking ebay a lot but it is so hard hard to bid on these things - there must be american girl doll mofia out there that dominates the biding on these things.
So, does anyone have any other suggestions on getting my hands on one of these dolls? Used is not a problem, we love pre-loved things in this house. Better yet, any hipmamas have one they are ready to pass on? I would pay for it...
Thanks everyone.

Would she go for

one of the Target knock-off dolls?

Good luck finding a good deal! You could probably get one on Ebay for half the price.

Just went to a BDay party at the store.

Are they more expensive on Ebay then new?

what?

this shit is big, huh? birthday day parties at american girl dolls stores... they are cheaper on ebay, but I can't seem to outbid anyone before it gets out of my price range. I will keep trying though. How much were they in the store?

whoa

I've heard about this AG hospital. That's crazy... but does it mean that if I find one in poor condition, I can just send it there and they will fix it up for free??

not for free, but

check out web site for costs, etc on replacements. I have an AG store here in Los Angeles so we could go there for repairs or hairdos (YES, they have a *beauty parlor*.

Mia was given an AG from my dad. It was a hand me down from his GF's dd. I had no idea what the hell the craze was. Needless to say my dd trashed it and then......my dad was flying in for a visit. He had some *AG* clothes for Mia's doll. I sent her ASAp to the doll hospital and they fixed her up good as new for about $50??

It's a racket I tell ya. Same marketing/sales formula as Disney and Barbie, etc.
Movies, clothes, accessories,....

However, I do prefer these dolls (esp. the historical ones to Disney, Bratz, Barbbie, etc..). The books/storylines that accompanies them are cool. Perfect for your kid's age. Mine is still a bit too young.

I'll ask my neices

They all have a few each & are now in high school. I just hope their sentimental value has worn off with the onset of teenage pursuits. I know they both have kit & the norwegian pioneer girl one ( both of these neices are blonde) & my chicano neice in Chicago has the hispanic doll and a few others. They all three have the "baby" American girl doll which they all have named baby lefse. All of this thanks to very generous grandparents. I'll put the word out on the street with my peeps & see if it pans out. Have you tried craigslist? I was surprised at how many responses I got when I put a wanted ad for some baby related things in the children's section.

i think this is cool

meeshums -

i think those dolls are pretty! i think it's great that you're getting her one.

she'll always remember this, this gift is special.

the stuff i've bought my kids that i didn't really like:

1. a weed shirt for skye! nice one skyeman!

2. condoms for skye, and yes, i had to actually hand them to him, more than once - necessary, and age appropriate.

3. pink girly stuff for mars - you know me, i'm the unisex/kid queen. once she refused to wear boys clothes anymore i had to change my mind/open this one up!

4. millions of stuffed animals for mars - not a favorite, kind of feels like a waste, but she likes them and plays with them a lot! most are given as gift to her, what can i say?

5. polly fucking pocket - done deal. waste-o-matica, but again, it's her thing.

6. food items that suck ass hard! you know what i'm saying here!

7. probably a jillion other things, i'm loosing count now and i need some oatmeal for breakfast!

life is sweet - get that doll girl!

hearts,

christy is the asian le femme nikita with an open heart chakra! *whew!*

$100!!

My mom got my daughter an American Girl doll years and years ago, I had no idea they cost so much; she never mentioned it. This had to be around '97, '98. Hope you find one!

Ameican Girl know it all

I have a 2 year old. That has 4 AG dolls (all bittys)and everything that go's with them times 2. Because she says the twins. We just did our taxes and our income was 11,000 for the hole year. So we don't have money. But I was one of those girls in school that didn't have one. I was a compleat outcast. So since I don't have much money I go on craigslist, yard sale, on ebay. But there a trick to winning. Say the bid is at 50.00 for a doll. At the last 15 sec. Put in 100.00. Know matter would you will win and if there counter bid was like 52.50 you'll win it for 53 even though you put in 100. I've never lost a bid. But any ways Her 2 bittys I only paid 7 each at a yard sale. Then close to christmas, Easter AG dose free shipping. Then on Dec 31st they have a meager sale online. I mean like 50%-75% off certain things.

my daughter has one

i can ask her in the morning if she's interested in parting with it.
i wouldn't bother trying to buy used because people collect them and you're right, there is a AG mafia out there and they have way too much disposable income. just go ahead and buy new, you won't spend more on new, and you'll have less hassle.
i was alright with AG until i took my kid to the store on 5th avenue a couple of years ago, she was interested in the audition for the kit kitteridge movie. the place freaked me out, and the plastic surgery disaster mothers and just the awful, awful waste of a place like that. i was very out of place, my daughter and i are so not their demographic.
but, she may want to keep the doll all the same. she can be sentimental. if she's interested in parting with it, i will pm you pics of the condition it's in. it's not great. ok but not great.
.
oh, and AG is all about the different shades of skin, hair and eyes. you can get whatever skin tone you want. i think i recall there being like 40 combinations of hair, skin and eyes.
come out
