this is also one reason i love portland, oregon.

yesterday, driving home, this was on the curb with a FREE sign. it even had the poker/stirstick thing with it

Photobucket

it was a bitch to get into the car but i am so happy i circled the block 3x to make sure it was what i thought it was.

now - help? how does a person start a compost bin? do i just throw the slimy veggies i had every intention of eating into the bottom of it? i figure hipmamas would know better than google, even. Smile

That is so awesome! Those

That is so awesome! Those things are expensive! Don't forget your coffee grounds and egg shells. And you'll want to layer food and things like that from the kitchen (no meat) , then yard clippings, food stuff, yard clippings, and so on. And then every few days turn it. TOTAL SCORE! I have the same one!

Dryer lint and dog hair can also be put in. You have to keep it fairly wet, too, so water it, especially if the weather's dry. It's helpful to have an inside compost bucket with a lid so that you don't have to go out every hour or so.

That is very, very cool!

That is very, very cool! Yeah, just put your fruits and veggies in there, coffee grounds, lawn clippings, anything orgainc. But no meat or dairy because that can attract flies and lead to maggots. Ew. If it starts to get "juicy" in there just add some dry leaves and you'll be good.

Gratz on the score!

you mix equal parts of

you mix equal parts of greens and browns, that is; veggie, egg, coffee leftovers from your kitchen (never meat or fats), with yard clippings like grass, leaves, etc. for every one of those you put in, you throw in just a handful of dirt (it contains enzymes which help with the composting process (it's not about balancing the load with a little dirt, it's about what enzymes it brings to the mix). you can also place small layers of ash in there, like from a fireplace if you have that.

I mixed mine up with a pitchfork maybe once a year to blend all the layers.
