My brother's coming home!!!!
When my brother was 19 he was in a terrible car accident. He was speeding, the lady ran the stop sign and didn't have her grandkids strapped into their carseats. Both toddlers died on impact. It was an absolutely AWFUL, TRAGIC accident for everyone involved. My brother was put on probation for 10 years for vehicular manslaughter. He maintained fairly well for a couple of years, but the trauma of the accident (among other things) eventually wore him down and he began stealing and shop lifting. He stole nearly 1500 dollars from me over a 3-year period (which my parents paid back), and my parents nearly went bankrupt/crazy because of him. Inevitably he got pretty heavily involved in drugs. He was stuck in this town because of probation, and couldn't seem to get off drugs (it's hard to escape certain crowds in this town because of it's size and mentality). He went into rehab several times but to no avail. So he broke his probation and went to California where he was soon caught because of the violation. He was sentenced to 5 years maximum in prison. That was four years ago. Every year we've waited anxiously for him to get parole, and every year he's been denied....until today!!!
He's coming home, one year early, on July 3rd!!!!
I can't stop crying today. I'm so friggin' excited!!! I have all these great plans for what we can do together this summer and all the ways we can support him, but I'm really nervous for him. I mean, he's been in the system for over 11 years (pretty much his whole adult life), and he's been incarcerated for over 4 years, and he still seems bitter and jaded. I don't know how he'll cope being out in the "real" world now. I'm definitely afraid it'll be too much of a temptation to slip back into old habits.
If any of you mamas have any advice or thoughts on how I can help him cope during this adjustment period, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks for listening to me rattle on!

This story just tugs at my heart. My only advice is to love him, be there for him and be tough if you ever need to be(i.e. not letting him take advantage of you if the time ever arises). I'm so excited for you and i'm sending so many vibes his way to start a new, better life. (((hug)))
