Update on "The Business of Being Born" Screening
So, it's been a month since we did the screening. We had about 30-35 people show, about 10 of them being midwives or doulas. We had the head of the ICAN chapter for our region come as well (thanks to whomever suggested I look into that...she had loads of information on local doctors and their c-section rates). It was pretty low-key, but once I got the ball rolling with questions and answers, the discussion went on for over an hour and a half! I really learned a lot as did everyone else who came. We had quite a few young, scared, pregnant mamas there with no clue what to do but left feeling much more secure. Actually, the film and discussion changed each and every woman's mind there about their birth experience. And all of the preggo women there have changed their birth plans to include either a doula or a midwife and are finally taking control of their bodies and their babies.
Anyway, I just recently got full feedback from the outcome of the screening a few days ago. Nothing but positive reviews. Without Hipmama, I wouldn't have even known about the film or even the option of homebirth (this town is a little too small to be that openly progressive). Thanks to y'all, many women here are changing the way this town gives birth. You guys are friggin' awesome!
