We started the pump...

Just thought I'd send out an update regarding DS' move to an insulin pump. Monday we went up to his endocrinologist team to start the pump. For our first week (now) we will only be administering saline through the pump to make sure that Mom actually knows what she is doing. This has taken a little bit of pressure off since I know that I won't be throwing him into a serious low if I make a mistake; but it has also proven to make the adjustment a little more difficult for DS. The trade-off for having to wear this heavy thing attached to his body 24 hrs a day is that he won't have to have anymore injections. However, being that he is only getting saline this week we still have to give his insulin the old fashioned way. After we talked about Mom needing practice & made a paper chain representing our last shots he seems to understand and be okay with it.

This morning was the first time that I had to change the inset, which is the large needle that threads the small, flexible catheter into his body to administer the insulin throughout the day and at meals. It was pretty nerve racking to do for the first time unobserved but I think we did okay. It is a little before 9am and I do feel like I could use a stiff drink though! I remember feeling this way everytime we had to give an injection when he was first diagnosed (which will be three years ago this summer) and I know that it will get better as we get more familiar with it as part of our routine.

Other than that, DH is traveling for work this week; I finally finished my second year last week and start summer classes next week! DS and I have been enjoying our time together, just the two of us, which has been nice after the hectic schedule at the end of my semester.

Hope everyone is having a beautiful week and has fun plans for the summer.

I thought of you when we started. Its been about 3 wks and we're starting to get the hang of it. It has been a bit of a challenge getting up so much at night to get his basal rates correct, which we still haven't reached yet but we're getting there. He loves the not getting injections. Though I am constantly yelling after him, "Be careful of your pump!" Smiling Hope all is well with you, Carl & the girls. Much love to you all. ~ T

I have seen med students' hands shake when they are doing finger pricks, and they signed up for this kind of stuff. I guess being a mother sometimes means being a health care practitioner, too.

I hope the pump works out. I wish they would perfect inhalable insulin already. The paper chain idea sounds great.

but you'll get the hang of it and soon you won't remember a day when you had to stick him with needles. Glad you are making this transition and I hope it continues to go smoothly.

It is good to hear you finally have the pump to try! I hope it goes really well!

How often do you have to change the catheter?

Vibes for this transition!

From what I've heard they can be blessings...once you get used to them, I suppose! Good luck with the transition and happy summer planning to you too!
