quick pumped breastmilk question

Submitted by briefcandle on Mon, 05/12/2008 - 10:12pm.

Can I take out pumped milk from the freezer and thaw
it on the counter? I've only ever thawed in the fridge
for 24 hours. But tonight I have band rehearsal in 2
hours and I accidently put last night's pumped bottle in
the freezer instead of the fridge. I just now realized
this and pulled a bottle out onto the counter. Will it
even thaw in 3 hours? I just tried pumping but only 2
oz. came out Sad and he drinks at least 4 at bedtime.

Thanks!

wow, I didn't know it could thaw so fast. Guess the only thing I've every really thawed are chicken breasts and those take like 4 hours countertop, and the full 24 in the fridge. Of COURSE liquids are going to thaw quicker. Silly mama brain. thanks!

so, just to make sure, a fully frozen 4 oz. will thaw in a couple minutes under hot running water? well yes it must, if I think of how quickly ice thaws.

Do you freeze all your breastmilk in bottles? If you freeze it in freezer bags, laying them flat so it freezes in a thin layer, it will thaw in literally a couple of minutes in warm water. Soooo much easier!! They make smaller bags specifically for breastmilk, you should be able to find them at W*lm*rt or T*rget with the breastpumps and stuff.

the breast pump was a hand me down, and I'm not sure if it's ok to heat the bags (they're plastic, and I'm not sure what kind) - but it's probably ok to run them under warm water right? Anyone know for sure?

i second bleu's suggestion about laying them flat. That is the only way we store ours. Plus them you can stand them up all neatly in a row in a little bin or something arranged by date. : ) Waah? Me, anal? Nah.
Also, we have always used the plastic bags and run them under the warm water. It hasn't seemed to be an issue as far as safety, but you know...seems like every time I turn around I realize that I have been ignorant about something. Like wow! have I really been eating food cooked on Teflon most of my life!?!?

yep. only way that i've ever thawed was with warm water. hold it under the tap or in a glass or bowl of warm water. only takes a few minutes, especially if you swish it around a bit while it thaws.

Our ped nurse told us about a study that looked at bacterial counts of breast milk and formula left out on the counter. After however many hours the study lasted, the breast milk had LESS bacteria than it did at the start. I assume this property doesn't last forever, but certainly a few hours out of the fridge is ok!

Wow, that's pretty interesting! Another reason breastmilk is golden.

Thaw it in a sink of warm water, it will be much faster and safer then room temp.
