Essential oils

Any of you mamas have some experience with essential oils? Particularly using them to make your own cleaning products and using in candle diffusers. I've never used them and I'm interested in making my own cleaning products and someone suggested that I use essential oils for the smell and just all around goodness of them. And I also LOVE my wax tart burners, but the tarts are sooo expensive and I'd rather use something more natural anyways, so looking forward to trying the oils in them.
So can any of you recommend a book or website? I've come across a few, and I know the basics of them now. I know to make sure they are 100% pure, not perfume oils. And to make sure they are in dark glass bottles and whatnot. Where do you mamas buy yours?

There are so many books available that I am not really sure which to recommend, but Aromatics International offers a lot of free resources like recips and safety info. That's where I buy my oils, but I check it out pretty often just to get ideas. Since I have a toddler running around we don't light candles often. I actually use a diffuser, which my son thinks is great since it glows like a little blue spaceship. It nebulises (is that the right word?) water with a few drops of the oil in it and from what I understand that's safer than regular candle burning. (Plus most candles have synthetic fragrances which give me headaches.)

The lady who runs the website will actually answer any personal questions you have if you contact them. She's a licensed educator.

(My personal favorites are currently Bergamot and Lavender. Bergamot smells like in-your-face sunshiney citrus goodness.)

Awesome, thanks for the info! Bergamot sounds lovely and right up my alley. Love the nice, clean scents.

I use essential oils in cleaning products all the time. For my kitchen cleaner I use lavandar and orange oil. In my bathroom mix i use rosemary, tea tree, mint, and lavandar all the ¨green smells¨ really help to soften the acidic tang of the vinegar. In the dusting solution lavandar and mint. I like geranium in my laundry cause it smells so cheerful and energetic- but it isn't good for pregnant ladies.
Lavandar, Lavandar, Lavandar... I use so much that i am planting six bushes in my garden to see if i can make herbal waters and vinegars and what not to try to cut down on the oil consumption.
My bible for home-made cleaning products is the book ¨better basics for the home¨ by annie berthold bond. Best 14 bucks my mama ever spent on me (it was a xmas gift). It not only has everything i have ever needed by way of cleaning and laundry tips, but also has really great recipes for very simple skin and hair care. And in the section about perfumes there is a long list of traditional oil combinations that is very inspiring when it comes time to try new things.
If you want to PM we could get into it more. I could send you some recipes or something.

I use tea tree oil in my shower solution (vinegar & water, 1:1). Don't know if it makes a big difference, but I like the smell more than straight vinegar... Smiling

Lavendar in diffusers, or anything like that. A few drops in a water bottle to mist a room or something is always good. I don't know much about practical CLEANING with them.

I've never used essential oils to clean, but I'm interested!
I use them in my diffuser all the time - especially lavendar for calming and eucalyptus when we have colds... just a 6 - 10 drops.

Yeah, here's one of the sites about how to clean with it, http://www.natural-healthy-home-cleaning-tips.com/index.htm . I can't wait to try it, thought I was waiting until we moved, so I could just start fresh with it.

I use eucalyptus oil constantly. In my all-around cleaning solution- most often used in the bathroom. I just put a couple of drops in with the solution- which is a combination of vinegar, baking soda, dr bonner's soap, etc. I also use it all the time in the shower for head cold/congestion/sinus issues. LOVE the eucalyptus oil!!! I get organic version at my local co-op. Pricey, but since I only use a few drops at a time, it lasts for ever.

I'm actually looking forward to my next cold so I can try the eucalyptus, ha! I've heard so many people rave about it.
