Neverending sick

I really hate it when my kids are sick. As it is it feels like I am getting through my days like MacGyver - a little scotch tape here, a bent paper clip there that is keeping everything from falling apart. When one or both of them gets sick everything does fall apart. Bills don't get paid. Laundry doesn't get done. Calls don't get returned.

This week ds is really sick, the sickest he's ever been. He has been running a fever for a week, and it's showing no signs of getting better. We spent the entire day yesterday at the ER because the poor little guy is dehydrated, after a couple of days running 105 fever, vomiting and more. I've been trying to force fluids a sip at a time, soups, broth, Pedialyte. He's just wiped out. Every time the ibuprofen or Tylenol wears off his fever soars back up again. Did I mention this has been going on for a week?? And all they could tell me yesterday was that it's a stomach virus.

Does this seem weird to anyone else? Don't these things usually burn out after 3-5 days? They hooked him up to an IV yesterday and gave him a whole bag of fluid. This bug, or whatever it is, has just knocked him flat on his ass. I feel so bad for him!

On top of it the baby has been super clingy and wants to be carried 24/7, which is not an easy proposition when he weighs 23 pounds. Aaaaaand...I just threw out my back this morning.

I need to find a better headspace. NOW.

My kiddos...

...had the exact same thing about 3 weeks ago. R and A just ran a fever for a few days. H, however, ran fevers of 101-105 degrees for a week straight before it broke. E was lucky, his fever was only for a day. H has always had a tendency to get sicker than my other kiddos.

Our thing at the very end was Motrin/Tylenol alternating in half doses every 2 hours instead of a full dose every 4. I gave a half dose of Motrin, then a half dose of Tylenol in 2 hours, per doctor's order. It kept the fever in check and finally broke it. The doc said the same thing: it was a viral infection and antibiotics weren't going to work. I'm not a big fan of them personally, after seeing MRSA infections, Staph, and all kinds of hospital nastiness...and kid goo. I was very tempted, however to go to the ER a few times when I saw that 105 register on the thermometer.

Have faith Mama, it will pass. It's scary and frustrating as hell though.

Thanks!

We've been doing the Tylenol/Motrin thing too, just trying to keep him comfortable. He hasn't barfed since Monday, which is good, but he is STILL running the high temperatures! It's been over a week now. Crazy, evil bug!

We had something like that in March

My son was sick a LONG time, it was getting scary. But he's fine now...

How about ice pops to suck on to help with the hydration? They even have pedialyte ones or you can make your own with it...

Thanks for the suggestion!

If your ears were buzzing right now, it's because I just got back from the store with some Pedialyte popsicles. We'll see how well they go down.

Also - who knew Campbell's makes Lightning McQu*en Chicken Noodle soup? LOL.
