am I nursing a Tasmanian Devil?

Ok, is this a boy thing or simply a high-energy child thing: whenever R nurses to sleep at night, he seems like an amped up little octopus; his feet are bicycling like crazy pushing at my legs, my stomach, his upper arm is wildly clutching, pulling my shirt, slapping my chest, he's breathing all heavy like he's running a marathon, smacking. Sometimes he latches off then latches on like he's a piggie rooting in the mud. It's so boisterous and frantic. Anyone have a baby that nursed like this?

Also, he is equally enthousiastic about lunging towards any food that we might be eating. He hasn't started solids yet, I'm trying to hold out til 6 months. This Thursday he'll be 5 and 1/2 months and I was thinking of starting a little organic baby oatmeal mixed with breastmilk. He is SO upset at mealtimes and doing all those food readiness signs. It seems ridiculous to wait another two weeks. Or should I?

And is the wild nursing maybe an indicator that my milk is not satisfying his hunger (another 'readiness' sign)?

I should mention that he's a big 5 month old; at least 18 and a 1/2 lbs., 27 inches tall.

17 lbs 2 oz at 10 months (to be fair he comes from small people).
anyway, ds does the same running marathon thing...I just started swaddling him to get him to sleep. it's the only thing thay works because he was just getting (and keeping) himself all amped up.
I had to start giving him food at 4 months because he was going apeshit over food.
do what feels right to you

yes! apeshit! he turns on the waterworks when we're eating and then if I put him in my lap he lunges at my plate like he's trying to be tricky before I pull it away, faster than I've ever seen him move. this morning i swear he almost said, "damnit those strawberries look so good GIMME" the way he was straining towards them. he studies my mouth and makes chewing motions with his, and he is over the moon when given a napkin to shred in his mouth.

well thursday is the day, i've decided. he's drinking pumped milk for 24 hours then bc I have my CT scan with the radioactive iodine that day, so we might as well try mixing up some cereal with it and giving him a bowl to make up for the boob-separation.

do it! I was waiting for my boy to 6 mos too, but he was just freaking out. So, I gave him oatmeal/rice and boob juice. He dug it.

If you copy and paste that it takes you to a picture of his first time eating solid(ish)food. very cute. He was also a big baby.

OAB: Huntin' Panties! Oh, lord! I laughed out loud and feared I'd wake my baby. Nice cover. Eye-wink We have a similar one in "marigold" I believe it's called.

Regarding the feeding, follow your gut. I think his body is ready for it. He's gigantic (mine is only two pounds heavier, probably shorter, and she's twice as old.) I'm sure he's ready. And yeah, my DD is an "active nurser." She tries to CRAWL when we're nursing on our sides. *sigh* Yeah. And she loves to simultaneously stick her finger in my nose and her toes in my armpit when she's nursing. When she manages it, she starts giggling.

hahah, that is a funny image. ds wants to simultaneously propel backwards, roll over, nurse, and walk up my body

If yours is anything like mine, he'll be a little rooting piggie for some time to come.

The food thing is entirely subjective. I've been reading a lot on global feeding practices and nothing is set in stone...mine started eating bananas around 4 months. He just wouldn't wait, and it sounds like yours is waaaaay ready. Good luck and enjoy those nummy first food memories.

we had those in our house too!

we definitely went through some very active nursing...

food, I for one always feel like those guidelines are a little bit +/-...just like their height/weight ratios or when they are "Supposed to" walk, talk, get teeth, whatnot. go with your gut on this one, not the book...you know this already, I think Smiling

smash up a banana and see what he does with it! Sounds like he is ready to me.

enjoy your active baby!
