Waitress

Submitted by bleu7102 on Wed, 04/23/2008 - 7:17pm.

Has anyone else seen Waitress? All the talk about Juno made me think of it, both deal with pregnancy, both main characters not thrilled with it, etc. I watched it Sat., and I really enjoyed it. I think the ending was a bit cutesy and cliched, just a bit too "perfect". Anyone else like it or hate it?

Oh, did it not bother anyone else, the scene at the wedding, when Earl came storming in and throws the chair. How nobody steps up for her, trys to help her, stand up to him or anything? I mean, he's raging, I though she was going to get a beating, and they just let her leave with him, without a fight. That just really, really bothered me. I kept wanting to yell, "Someone do something, help her!!". Ugh, made me mad.

I think I'm pretty easy to please. It was definitely a bit too cutesy, but I did like it. On the whole topic of pregnancy genre films, what about Knocked Up? It was hyped as being sooo hilarious, and I didn't think it was funny at all. And talk about making a political/social statement by keeping mum about abortion...

Knocked Up, it was okay, had funny parts, but was nowhere near as funny as it was made out to be. 40 Year Old Virgin was way better, I think. About the abortion thing, I haven't thought about it much in regards to that paticular movie, but honestly, if they explored it too much then there wouldn't have been a need for the movie in the first place. What I mean is that the whole movie was about her getting pregnant, and then how they dealt with the pregnancy and birth. I just don't see how it would have been relevant to delve to far into it, ya know? I don't know, just my quick, inarticulate thought on it....

I laughed at Knocked Up in a kind of horrified way. The guys in that movie, I dunno, they were totally alien to me. I don't know any men like that (thank heavens). Oh well, except that my husband/partner is totally a fantasy baseball nerd but I don't have a problem with that. But yeah, nothing about abortion at all when I thought there should have been something- weird. In real life, there would have been! But then again, that movie totally not real life- mostly about making guys laugh and oooh at how hot the actress is.

I thought Waitress was sweet. Saw the legacy from the grouchy old man coming a mile off. I liked that she ended up single (even if the ending was a bit too perfect-happy) in a way-- just sort of demonstrated that you don't HAVE to be partnered for their to be a happy "ending." I thought the scene with her (asshole of a and pathetic) husband after he finds her stash of money really gutwrenching, I wanted her to run as fast as she could. Oh well, plot devices...

Yeah, that scene was powerful and sad. I also love the scene right after she gives birth and holds the babe for the first time.
Did appreciate the ending being happy without a man, that was nice.
How about the director being murdered before the movie was screened at Sundance, she never even knew how successful it was. And her daughter played Lulu at the end. Such a sad story, made it a bit more emotional to know that info.

She also played the part of the bespectacled waitress. It was really sad to hear about it.

WHAT? How did I miss that? Now I have to go look that up.

Yeah, I can't remember her name, Shelley something, or something Shelley. She wrote and directed it. I can't remember the details of her death, I believe she was murdered in her apartment, not sure by who, if they even know.
I watched some of the special features and that's when I learned it was her daughter in the movie at the end. Made me bawl like a baby.

I think she was a great one and it was so sad she didn't get to know what a hit the movie turned out to be! And her character in the movie was sweet and funny and goofy. I didn't know about that being her daughter though in the movie.

I think they (police) thought it was a suicide but it turned out to be murder- some guy from a construction site in her building, I think. Law & Order had an episode that I think was inspired by that (okay, I watch way too much L&O!!!!)

and i thought it was ok. entertaining.
i was really happy that she didnt end up with the dr in the end, and i loved how she got rid of the asshole husband.

Submitted by bleu7102 on Wed, 04/23/2008 - 8:05pm.

Yes, the fact that she broke it off with the dr. was one thing I really liked about it. She didn't go from shit, asshole husband to prince in shining armor who rescues her. Although I suppose the old man ended up being that prince. Hmmmm, hadn't thought about that yet.

No, I agree. And I didn't even realize that was Andy Griffith to begin with! I recognized the voice, and then in one scene it dawned on me who it was. I liked their relationship, prince or no.
