My step-daughter started her period.

She's 10. She started at her mom's house, so they've gone over everything. I talked with her about it--but what shall I do? Seems significant enough for some sort of ceremony? gift? ??? She won't want to be embarrassed about it in front of her dad and brothers--any ideas?

Maybe pulling her aside casually and slipping into her hand, then go out for a tasty dessert to celebrate, just you two. I like Strange quark's idea of the silver moon. My goddaughter recieved this incredibly lovely painting on silk from a mama in our HM community that really stands out in my mind. One other thing, show her where you keep your supplies and tell her it is ok for her to keep some at your house just in case.

Definitely a little gift, the gesture can go a long way.

i'd let the mother handle the celebration, if there is one. but a gift is nice. like this sort of thing:

I think it's the heat pack. Just my guess.

Yeah, I think a little something would be nice for her--just to let her know she's "one of us" now. And YEAH, don't talk about it in front her the guys. When my dad came up to me and said "so your mother tells me you're a young woman, now!" I about died. Died.

That's okay, my mom announced it at Thanksgiving - no lie.

OYE..painful, but funny. I'll bet he was just as mortified to have to bring it up?

I just had a flashback from Pulp Fiction of that song, "Girl, you'll be a woman soon."

would you consider just giving her a nice/small gift on the D.L.? i ask this becauee i think you're right about the embarrasment factor.

i think pulling her aside and handing her something nice would be perfect, and it might be a nice gesture just between the matriarch and step daughter.

if i were 10, i think i would like this!

holler back, and let us know what you decide to do! i support you, period.

hearts,

dc

p.s. i was 11 when i got my period! my 7 year old already knows what to expect, but i want to do something similar for her when her time comes!

I remember an old back issue of Mothering magazine having some cool ideas. maybe try their message board?
