Nose piercing

Submitted by bleu7102 on Wed, 04/16/2008 - 3:36pm.

So I’m contemplating getting a very tiny nose stud after we move. I’ve never had anything other than my ears pierced, so this will be new territory. Any of you mamas have any advice or stories for me? Was it hard to take care of, heal quickly, infections, etc? How painful was it for you? Also, any good places online to buy a nice stud, I want something that is not a jewel. I’m just not a big fan of the sparkly things, maybe a marcasite stone or something earthy or just plain. Can I bring my own stud to use or do I have to use one of theirs?
Thanks for any advice or experiences!

On a complete side note, I'm loving the booger pickers coming forward unashamedly! I have to raise my hand and join you guys. Again, something I had never considered with the nose ring...

lurkers are reading I pick my nose is it? It's like picking your nose when you're driving and you think no one can see you.

My car is sacrosanct. Heh.

Also, with the nose piercing you have an excuse to pull the innocent look & say, "Gosh, the back of my nose ring was just doing something funky/needed adjustment/insert favorite excuse here." Of course, if your finger comes out of your nose with a big hunk of gold on it, you're totally busted. Smiling

Oh mama. You just totally blew up my spot. I use that excuse all of the time. "I was adjusting my hoop!"

but my belly ring would never heal. I even ended up with some scaring *minor) and I went to a good place. I even went to my reg MD for some Rx antibiotic cream, etc...
Nada.
Ended up taking it out. The flip side is I had a healer tell me the belly button can be a very sensitive area for women. I pick my nose too much. I know I'd become obsessed.

my prob was a few times when i took it out, i had trouble getting it back in! i had to go back to the shop for them to help me. but i think it's because i had one of those twisty studs. but the last time i took it out i had a regular stud (like an earring) and i never could get it back in! so that is why i no longer have one... other than that, it was just fine. but the boogers were huge and annoying that would get stuck on it. yuck and ouch!

I got mine in November and it is just now healed pretty much completely. I had no idea going into it, that it would take so long to heal. You get used to the nose blowing thing. I'm a big nose picker and that really changed things for a while, but now I can pick with it in. Haha! I just clean it every morning with a cue tip and I'm good. I love it and don't regret getting it done at all. Go with a needle at a reputable place and I guarantee it doesn't hurt as much as you think it will. Mine was pretty much painless. What hurts is when you accidentally snag it on a towel or something. YOWWW!
Oh and they made me buy mine at their shop. I think they are somewhat liable if you don't use their medical grade steel, if gets infected.?? Something like that. They have a spray you can use to keep it clean, you just spray it and it works great. You have to be sorta careful if you wear makeup, cause mine has gotten infected a few times, though not badly. Now I take some eye contact solution and swipe it after I'm done with my makeup. Have fun! "Life may not be the party we hoped for but while we're here we might as well dance".- Maya Angelou

I've had mine for 7 years and never had a problem. I echo the advice of the other sage mamas: reputable place, needle,no gun, keep it clean, but don't go overboard.
The guy who pierced me said nose rings are not like earrings. You shouldn't change the jewelry often. Pick something you dig and then just leave it in. I've had the same hoop in for 5 years (I left the original stud in for 2 years). They generally won't use your jewelry unless it's been autoclaved.
I didn't think it hurt at all, but I'm covered with tattoos and have had "other" piercings which hurt much more.
Good luck!

Go to a piercing shop with a good reputation that has licensed piercers where they will do the piercing with a needle rather than a piercing gun. My dumb ass got my nose pierced via gun when I was in college and out drunk in NYC one night. Not the way to go. If the piercer knows what he/she is doing the piercing should be good and they'll tell you how to take care of it and ideally be available for a consultation if you're having problems. Piercers like this usually get paid on commission and tips... they're not going to want to piss off or alienate a client so don't be afraid of going back with questions. BD works at a piercing shop and this happens all the time. Lots of people go in with questions/problems or just to get their jewelry changed.

I'll definitely be picky about the shop. I may even get it done before we move, cause we have some very reputable shops here where both I and DH have gotten tatoos (Inksmith and Rodgers, have been around forever, very highly thought of). The place we're moving to has a ton, but it's a very touristy town, so not sure how reputable many of them are, will have to do some research.

but it's over fast at least. Now I have no problems except some boogers getting caught on the inside part.

Ha, haven't thought about the boogers! Although I have always wondered how you blow your nose with one in...........

mine did not go well. if you can find my old blogs, i think it was in early 07?? shit, i have no sense of time. i looked for the posts and didn't find it, but anyway. it was always red. as in always. it itched and felt like a bad zit. twice i got little abcesses on it, and i went to get them drained at the studio where i got it done, where they insisted that there was noting out of the ordinary about my piercing. the piercer suggested that i was fucking with it too much, preventing it from healing. but i wasn't, it was just a bad piercing.

so if this starts to happen, just get it out, let it heal and try again. if you try to stick it out, you'll have a scar like i have.

Okay, icky, red nose= take out piercing, got it! Ugh, sucks yours didn't work out. That was kind of the same way with my 2nd holes in my ears, they never wanted to heal and were always red and infected. I got them done twice and no go both times.
Thanks, I'll see if I can't find your old post, it seems like I almost remember them.

is ok. i would show it to the people who pierced it and ask if it should still be red and they'd go "oh yeah, it can take a year to hear because there is cartilege in there." which should have tipped me off right there because there actually isn't cartilege in teh nasal piercing. septum, yeah, but not the nasal. and, i have a cartilege piercing in my ear and it actually healed very nicely and quickly. anyway, everyone is different so it's hard to say. but i was diligent with teh salt soaks and keeping it clean and not wearing makeup (not that i wear makeup anyway, just saying.) then when they suggested that i'm being too diligent with it, i backed off. i tried every combination of doing stuff to it, switching up what i do to it, doing nothing, doing less, and it never improved. and i also read online so many different experiences with it, people who had excessive redness and it got better that i wanted it to succeed.... heh. then one day when it was acting up on me one day, it was actually after midnight when i saw it abcessing on me, and i had something important the next day. not like formal or anything, just special enough that i dind't want a pustule on my face for. certain situations call for being pustule free. anyway. instead of calling my piercer, i called a place on the west coast because they were open because of the time difference. when i told them what happened they were like... "and you are sure you went to a reputable place" and basically told me i got a bad piercing and i shuold have taken it out months prior, and a piercer with integrity would have told me this, rather than telling me to wash it more or less, etc. and that they piercer shuoldn't have insisted on taking it out himself, which is what my guy did. he wanted me to call him and have him do it, whether i was changing the ring or taking it out.

a rule of thumb i would say, three months. if it's still looking newly done and red and sensitive, take it out. and find someone really reputable. don't just go by one person's recommendation, like i did.

I'm so paranoid of not going to a reputable place. I mean, of course I'll follow my instinct and trust my gut, etc. But still, there are sooo many out there, hard to tell. I many end up going to one here before we leave, they are very well known and we've been there for tattoos, so we'll see. I want another tattoo, so maybe I'll just have it all done as a going away present to myself!
It's good to hear your experience so I know what to look for.

that you want them to be willing to follow up with you if you have problems. so, if you are moving far away, it could be inconvenient. maybe it's best to find a place where you are going. because if you do have problems and you need to find someone local anyway, you you're already doing that legwork. you could just do it sooner rather than later.
