toilet learning - what to do now?
Submitted by sweetdumpling on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 5:16pm.
Patience has been in training pants and diapers (when we're out and at
night) for what seems like forever, but probably 8 months or so. she
has had success (as much as i can hope for with someone who will be 2
in a couple of weeks). she is not at all regular with the potty, but
has gone on it quite often. some weeks it'll be one or 2 a day, other
weeks there will be nothing.
There just doesnt seem to be any progress. in fact, i'd say theres a
bit of a regression- if i can even call it that. she's at a stand
still and i dont know what to do.
do i get her covers that fit her better and put her in diapers (that
way i dont have to bend over and clean up the messes), so i figure out
a way to convince her to learn faster? is there such a way?
i think its just that she doesnt know how to "let go" when she's on
there. she knows how to push and will sometimes get success when she's
got to poo. she'll sit on there and read books and isnt uncomfortable
at all, but she just doesnt seem to know what she's doing.
i know theres a learning curve here, and it might just take her a
while because thats who she is, but what do i do in the mean time?
does anyone have any advice for me?
TIA,
jen

all children are different. IMO, she is not progressing b/c she isn't ready. Plus, you can expect much more regression after the baby arrives. I hear you on the diapers & not wanting to go back, but she has to decide when to go forward.
S was a month shy of 3 when she announced she was done with diapers (of course she is still in them at night). E plays with the idea & has made it to the potty a few times, but I think she wants to be like S. Who knows.
Elizabeth Pantley has a No Cry Potty Training book.
I wish you well!
