Names

OKay Mama's. I'm early in my pregnancy (10 weeks), but my husband and I have started getting into the name discussion. We have several girl names we both like, but CANNOT agree on a boy's name.
anybody want to start throwing some boy names out for us?
He likes names like: Moses, Juilius, & Irving (there is a basketball theme there)
I like names like: Dexter, Mayan, & Cai...

These are some boys names I love:
Simon
Atticus
Gideon
Hugo
Finn
Reed
Alec

In regards to letting people influence your choice, don't let them. This is your little baby to name, not theirs. And it is just their opinion. Follow your heart, mama.
You must live, not simply exist.

So I went to the NBA all-star game entry on wiki, and Adrian & Frazier popped out at me Our #1 boys name (never to be used now) is Charlie (Charles Barkley?). We also looked at family last names (MacKinnon was on our list) if you go back in your family tree you might find something interesting.

Heh, my husband would like the basketball theme!

Awhile ago he stumbled across this kind of cool website for coming up with baby names:
http://www.nymbler.com/

You put in names you like and it comes up with suggestions. I put in Dexter and you husbands (it didn't have enough info. for Cai and Mayan- which is a drawback, for the more unusual names it doesn't have the data) and these are some that it came up with that *I* liked:

Virgil
Augustus
Lucius
Marcellus
(okay, so I like ancient Roman names!)
Solomon
Daniel
Nathaniel (I think Nate is a good name too)
Tomas

Our personal boy baby names - feel free to use, I'm not possessive! Smiling But I realize they probably aren't of the wildest popularity!

(the aforementioned) Béla
(the aforementioned) Orestes
Francesco
Gael
César
Federico

I love these name blogs.....

I was telling my husband about this blog and as I suspected he was down with your husband's basketball theme. And he wanted to add the following suggestions...

Bird
Elgin (going for old school)

I started to laugh rather hysterically at Bird (after Larry Bird of course) and he got a bit upset and was like, "I think that's a REALLY cool name! Seriously." Ahhh, whaddya gonna do with basketball nerds? Gotta love them, anyhow.

best advice i can offer, look through books, read movie credits, and keep any name you are considering to yourselves. people are rude and will voice their opinion on your choices. i would never open up such a personal decision to other people's opinions again! and family members are THE worst.

How much did you let parents, in-laws and family inlfuence your naming decisions?
We had a girl's name picked and my in-laws ripped it to shreds. Afterwards my husband said we'd have to rule the name out, but I felt almost like, 'Well that's DEFINITELY what we're naming it if it's a girl'!

hmmm, I replied before but it went away...so sorry if this is a repeat.

My mother really dislikes two of our boys names (Orestes and Béla) but I told her point blank that it didn't matter what she thought. She'd really like us to name our child (I'm 13 weeks pregnant) Rose if it's a girl- this is not anywhere on our list. I figure our parents had their chance to name their kids (and if they cave to family pressure or "tradition" or whatever...too bad), it's our turn now. And it's OUR kid, not to put too fine a point on it. I know lots of people who don't talk about possible names to avoid this situation but I'm too much of a blabbermouth to follow this path. But it's pretty funny the looks you get from people who think your name choices are odd, not to mention comments from people who are less polite. As far as I am concerned the only reasonable response to someone's name ideas is "Oh isn't that a cool/nice/interesting name!" regardless of what you personally think. Can we all say, "None of your Business!" Eye-wink

We kept ours secret until we were really, really sure. Once we loved our kids' names, there wasn't anything anyone could say that would make us change our minds. Everyone has an opinion and they just love to share.

That's exactly what my friend has decided to do, just wait until he/she is born. For some crazy reason she's decided to use me as a sounding board, so I'm trying to be a cool balance of respect for what she likes while being honest when she asks me to. But I know in the end she will choose what she wants cause she won't have 50 different outside opinions.

Ugh, how annoying to have people think they have a say in your kid's naming process. We were lucky that most everyone loved our choice. I could tell his mom wasn't thrilled with it, but too bad. It was my grandma's middle name, so there was some attachement on that level from my side of the family.

Hmmm, that's the theme today, just helping my friend earlier think of boy names. I'll throw out a few.....

Isaiah-my babe's middle name, love it!
Shae
Theo
Daniel-kinda plain, but one of my faves
Silas-she was pondering this one
