Staph infections

Anyone know of any natural (or just non antibiotic) remedies that could work on a diaper rash turned staph infection?

I am giving him echinacea, vitamin C and using goldenseal directly on it. I just started all of this so I have no results yet. Also, I bought a pack of disposables and am using them instead of our (free) cloth diapers... and we are washing our hands before and after diaper changes. We use weleda diaper cream and will put it on directly after poops to help with soreness and rotate that with the goldenseal.
Any other thoughts or ideas for me? Ds is 14 months old and has a doctors appointment on Wed that I was hoping to keep (and not take him in sooner), but I JUST realized what this never ending rash was so I want to treat it right away. And besides, anything that I can do to keep him from going on antibiotics would be great. However, if that is the only solution, then I can't fight it...
Thanks!

I find that my dd had an almost constant rash when I would use fuzzi bunz. Do you use them?
I switched to swaddlebees with the wool cover or with longies and noticed a big difference.
When she gets a rash I will use a disposable like pampers cuz it keeps the wet off her skin.
I feel guilty as hell about it, but it was the only thing that worked for me.
If it is infected, I would def have it looked at, just to be on the safe side.
I hope he feels better soon!

How can you tell it's a staph infection? Staph is a normal skin bacteria, so unless there's skin breakdown, it's unlikely to be staph causing the underlying problem. Even if there's a culture showing staph, sometimes it's just a contaminant. Yeast (bright red, distinct edges) is much more common, and can be treated with over the counter yeast cream- monistat, e.g. The best thing to do for an angry diaper rash if it's not yeast is to use unscented wipes/plain water to wipe, then let the skin air dry, then put some A&D or other unscented, greasy ointment. Air is important, so if you can keep the diaper off for a while before you put the ointment on, even better.

i can tell

because I went online and read up on it and saw some photos. it's not yeast because I had thrush for a long time and had this killer medicine cream that cost me like $50 and killed my thrush in a day or two after 6 months of trying everything, including medicine... and I put it on him for a little bit and it did nothing.
we do naked time a lot. this kid does not pee with his diaper off unless it's been a long ass time. and we use water to clean and occasional unscented wipes. I am an all natural freak.

I'm glad it's getting better- the things you're doing all sound like good ideas. I guess I would still say that a staph diaper rash is not the most likely (of course I can't see it, so you have that advantage). If I look at a skin infection that looks bacterial, staph is one cause, but strep is just as common, and there's no way to tell them apart just by looking at it- a culture is the only real way. (Though antibiotics that cover staph usually cover strep and vice versa). Even community acquired MRSA, which is the one that they talk about on the news, has a somewhat characteristic look, but there's no way to tell unless a culture is done. You could call your doc on Monday if it still looks bad and tell him you think he has a bacterial infection and see if you can be seen sooner. Sounds like it is going the right direction, though- hope that continues!

Hmmm, I don't know, I don't

Hmmm, I don't know, I don't have any recommendations, but a staph infection would scare the crap outta me. I mean, those can get super serious, right? I'm definitely no expert, but anytime I hear staph infection I think super serious, in the hospital, flesh eating bacteria. But I'm sure there are great varying degrees to it. My brother just recently had a staph infection in his leg and it took a while of being on medication and daily cleanings and many dr. visits to clear it up. But it was probably a different kind all together. I guess I've just heard all the super serious stories, I don't know.

they can get that bad

but I'm not worried about this yet. there are definitely different levels to it. I figure if it gets worse by Mon then we will go in, but I feel safe just waiting until our doctor visit on Wed. plus, what I am doing so far seems to be working - SO says it's looking better!

not sure

I've battled staph with my older girl and myself, with her it is a swollen gland in her neck (which she has had penicillin for 3 times, which I hate the fact of) and sores in my nose (so far polysporin has worked the best). I would use polysporin on his diaper rash- if it is staph it will take it away. Staph and strep are both types of mold and polysporin kills that. I don't know much about yeast infections, but staph is extremely prevalent and a real drag to deal with.
Good luck and poor baby!! that sounds very painful.
