Big poop problem

My 3 year old son is having some real pooping issues. We took him to the ER this week because he was screaming and crying in pain. He was given a fleet enema and we were there for 3 to 4 hours while my son screamed and cried until something large came out! Now I think not only is he physically sore from that, but he's scared to poop because he thinks it will always hurt to go. Which is hard now because for the next few days as we hope he will empty everything in his belly (that the doc saw in his x-ray)it actually will hurt the first few times. He's on a doctor prescribed laxative (lactulose). I just feel awful for him and I don't know how to help him! I've been trying my best to give him high fiber foods, limit dairy, and he drinks water all day long, but he's beginning to refuse fruit and has, for quite some time, stopped eating veggies. Can I actually force him to eat better stuff? Can I force him to poop (safely)?
I just don't know, but I'm concerned for him.
Anyone have any similar experiences?

don't know that this will help BUT when i was smaller they actually had to stretch my rectum because it was not big enough as my body grew for poops i was making. just an outside thought there, also can you sneak some sort of fiber supplement into his water or a drink? also try pedialyte for awhile instead of water see if that makes a difference. how about those new yogurts with the digestive help? if his butt is sore use some tucks or something soothing that will at least make it feel better between poops.good luck mama

my friend's daughter had serious constipation for a while. To get her enough fiber they just put raisins and shredded carrots in EVERYTHING. If there is any kind of fruit or veggie he likes just run with it.
They went to a nutritionist who recommended raw milk instead of pasteurized milk (easier on the digestive system) but we happen to be lucky enough to live in one of the few states that allows the sale of raw dairy.

Wishing happy poops ahead for your little guy. good luck!

consider trying to find a more holistic physical therapist. I used to work with one that did these adjustments on children with chronic constipation. She was just booked to oblivion with these kids and the treatment that she did took a few minutes, was painless & the kids had complete relief for months. Most came every three months or so.
I'm not sure what the name of type of adjustment was, but it worked. certainly something to look into. good luck mama. Hope he feels better soon.

I'm not sure where you are located, but do you have a name and number for this person? Maybe they would have some insight to where I could find holistic therapy like that in the Baltimore area.

and the lactulose should be very helpful for him. Ike had poop problems that he has pretty much grown out of, but I still have to administer enemas occasionally when he eats too much dairy. We never went with any aides, but I have heard raving reviews about it from naturally minded people. My niece's 2 month old just got a script and she gives it to him as soon as a day has passed and he has had no poop.
Good luck with it

He said his tushy hurt and he felt like he had to go, but after a little while of trying - and crying with pain - he couldn't do it. And he's scared. I just hate that I can't simply fix this for him! I considered a glycerin enema, but have had trouble finding them for children.

or a fleet enema (my preference is fresh water in a reusable bulb - the water eases the poop out just fine and the saline has a tendency to aggravate a child's intestine more and cause cramps). It will tell you how much to use if it is an adult size.
This seems like such a horrible thing at first, but BELIEVE me, it is much worse to let it build up then to just clear it out and start from scratch. We have been dealing with this for a year. I know what you are going through! Smiling
We went through food allergy testing and months of gluten free/egg free/dairy free diet before we gave it up and figured out it was just dairy that was really clogging him. Now we try to make sure he doesn't overdo certain foods and he does pretty good. Also, no amount of fiber or natural laxatives (didn't use lactulose) did anything for his intestine.
