Any advice?

Submitted by Enelesn on Sun, 03/16/2008 - 2:21am.

I am very early in my 2nd pregnancy (probably 6 - 8 weeks). My 1st was pretty much a breeze. If I felt nauseous - I ate and that took care of that. I felt strong, beautiful and confident and was told so very often that I was glowing...
This time around, I feel awful. Constantly nauseous and vomiting. My skin feels dry all over. I have pretty bad dandruff. I feel like I look awful and I'm tired and weak and fragile and... This just isn't how I hoped to be feeling. I know there's only so much I can do, but does anyone have suggestions to help me feel better? Or at least more like myself? Heck, I would be fine without advice if I could just find someone to commiserate with!

definitely not the same glowing feeling, then again I didn't have the luxury of sleeping (all day if I wanted!) or eating properly as I did the first time around. Instead I was nursing for the first4 or so months (totally made me feel so much worse, just draining every ounce of nutrients I took in), ill all day and most of the night for the first 3 months and then the hip pain set in and I had pretty much constant pain in my hips until #2 was born in November.
Sorry not much comfort, but remember it will all be worth it when you see your new baby.
Otherwise, try to nap when you can, take your b vitamins (I was going to say a complex b, that includes b6, 12 etc) and eat what you can. It will get better, hopefully!!

I totally commented on this last night but my comment isn't here... with my last pregnancy I had morning sickness for the first trimester and B6 vitamins helped a lot - they took a few weeks to work though. If you do an internet search for nausea during pregnancy you will find a lot of suggestions and maybe even the reason why B6 vitamins help with it since I just can't remember.
Hang in there.

I'll definitely look into the B6.
I've begun taking my vitamins in the afternoon - I can't keep them down in the morning.
I've also heard about a ginger gumlet...

getting your 75-100 grams of protein a DAY. Insufficient protein intake will cause nausea and all the other problems you listed.
Protein and water will fix most of what ails you when you are pregnant, but you have to be consistent with it.

That's a lot of protein! I'll give it a shot. I'll have to find alterative protein sources - The sight of meat makes me ill right now.
Thanks!

Nuts is what my midwife suggested for protein. Snacking on them all day and any time at night when I woke up.

I only have one, BUT the first 3 months of being pregnant with her was like what you describe. SO tired all I could do is sleep. I felt like my body was full of sand.I just thougt that was normal for the first trimester! Also with a little one already there to take care of who wouldnt feel like that!!! I have also her an old wives tale that how you feel durning the pregnancy in the begining is because of teh sex of the babe, I guess it has somthing to do with the estrogen or testosterone....but I dont remember which was you feel or either sex. Hahah sorry not much help. I have been there though and it did go away in the second trimester. Good luck!

well, no real advice here. I think about a second child all the time, but we'll see....

Apart from that, I have been feeling frumped-out lately. I'm attributing this restless, dissatisfied funk to the fact that spring has arrived. I am now too old to go on spring break.... I'm reeeeally regretting the poundage I managed to pack on with DS.

What was your bounce-back like with your first baby? Did you feel great all the time pregnant and then have a hard time post-partum, or was the recovery a breeze as well? Maybe you'll feel as differently after you deliver this baby in proportion to how awful you feel now? What's different this time? Are you in a different climate?

It seemed that while pregnant, I acquired this easy-going manner. Daily stuff that used to drive me nuts suddenly didn't upset me anymore, I was worried about bigger stuff. I attribute this to the chemistry of the baby my body was making. He's very easy-going. I'm not anymore.

Maybe this child is very different chemically from the first one you had? Maybe this batch of DNA is harder for your body to adjust to? Or it could be that your body, now being a pro at this baby-makin' stuff, is responding much more quickly to your pregnancy. A jerky start, or something like that.

I'm probably full of beans here, but I wonder about stuff like this. Have you ever heard of the four humors? But I digress.

My feeling is, that if this pregnancy is harder in some ways, it will be easier in other ways. We can always hope this nonsense will fade away toward the end of the trimester, right?

I have never experienced a second pregnancy but a very dear friend of mine did and with her second she felt quite frumpy and worn down by having the second so close to the first. If I learned anything, it is this: don't go off and get yourself a new "easy to manage" haircut. You will regret this. It will only add to the misery.
Other than that, well each pregnancy is it's own damn affair. I hope you start to feel better soon and that your "glow " comes around. Hang in there mama.

You're comment made me laugh because I did get a haircut - nothing drastic at all. My usual haircut, but that was my first idea of a fix to feel "pretty"!
Funny.
