movie mamas: end-o-aught-seven
this is usually a big week for movie-watching. anybody see anything good lately?
i caught a fantabulous doc about Ralph Nader on independent lens last week called An Unreasonable Man. and man oh man, does ralph rock or what? seeing this film seals it for me. i just want to give him a hug. and a vote. and say thank you, ralph. which i already do, i swear, every time i fasten my seatbelt.
i also saw Juno tonight. and laughed my ass off. even cried a bit, too. i hate when good movies get hyped beyond hype, which has happened with/to this one in a way i haven't seen in ages. i did my best to steer clear of the press, which wasn't easy. but i also psyched myself down for it after having reading/hearing what a couple friends had to say about it, mostly of the not liking it because it wasn't _____ enough ilk. and i'm glad i did because i was left with simply being delighted by it. and i totally heart the boyfriend in it, the one from superbad.

There will be blood, Margot at the wedding, Juno, Atonement...in that order. Wether or not we get a chance to see those in the theatre is another story!
We saw No country for old men over thanksgiving and loved it. Sweeney Todd the other weekend and somewhat undecided. I wanted to love it, but I didn't feel an emotional investment. Only at one point, Helena Bonham Carter moved me. I'd still run away with Johnny Depp, though.
DH and I were/are so excited about Juno - but DH feels the way you do about the hype - to the point that he doesn't want to see it anymore!!
He and I are equally in love with Michael Cera - did you ever catch him in Arrested Development? he's pure genius.
dh keeps bumping it down, we have a power struggle over the movie queue. but i can't wait to see it.
i've seen some good shit lately, mostly akira kurosawa, which i hadn't seen before. the shit is good. really, really good. i have "stray dog" for tonight. i'm probably in the minority, but i liked tideland. i also enjoyed this documentary:POPaganda: The Art & Crimes of Ron English.another one i may be in teh minority about, i liked: forbidden zone that would be good one for tonight, if you're having enhancements. then there was also all about my mother which was excellent. oh, another one that would be good for a party is Head the monkees movie.
we only get 2 at a time, but netflix has an option to create different queues for the account - so DH and I each have one, eases the power struggle a bit, but then you have to decide which one to watch.
we use movies in place of tv, so we watch a lot. dh has a little hissy fit when we get a few in teh mail, and they weren't his choices. nice to be with a grown up, i tell ya. i actually printed out our entire rental history, and showed him that almost half are his... duh. but he went through this phase when he would go into the queue and change the order, bumping my art documentaries down for motorhead DVD's. there are surprisingly plenty of motorhead DVD's. jokes on him though, i fell in love with motorhead.
We just saw Namesake with Kal Penn - he was Kumar in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle (which I unabashedly loved). Anyway, it was a great Saturday night in kinda flick - I highly recommend it.
I have Juno and into The Wild on DVD, but have yet to watch. I rather piss an moan about my kid not sleeping with me than sit with DH while she sleeps in her own bed and watch films. I know, I know, I'm working on it.
That said, I totally agree about pres hyping films and expecting too much. I will take that with me when I watch Juno.
Going the see Alvin and The Chipmunks on 1/1.
Yeah, I suck. I KNOW that already.
.
Just saw Sweeney Todd. I liked it, Johnny Depp did an amazing job. I have to admit that the singing got kind of old about half way through the film but that could have been because I was not in the movie going mood anyway. I was antsy for it to be over as soon as we got there, what has happened to me??
I didn't know it was a musical until it started and I must admit a had a moment of panic. But once I settled in, I enjoyed the movie although I did have to cover my eyes a few times at all the neck splitting and blood squirting.

I had a lazy day at home with the girls post new years. We watched planet earth dvds that my mom got us for xmas. The photography is fabulous. I love the creatures that live deep deep under the sea, they are so out of this world looking.
I'm glad you liked Juno. I was glad to see that crockmama was crying and I wasn't just the only sap. I'm going to have to watch super bad now.
Happy New Year.
