so last weekend, i took my daughter to her first roller derby. it was a chamionship bout between two NJ teams. she was entranced and in love. i got her some buttons for her jacket, and when she got to school the next day, all the kids asked about them, including her FRIEND (hint, smooching friend, or whatever nine year olds do friend) told her that the button she was wearing wasn't his favorite team, but NJ Bridge and Pummel was.... so she comes home and asks for the button for that team and gives me hers... cute.
anyway, she's been asking if there are any roller derby teams for girls, and i assuemed no because of liability, but i have found a junior league in the north west. no leads on any in the northeast. anyone know? i took her roller skating today... she has a ways to go in that department, but she loves it.
anyway, if anyone has any leads on kids roller derby leagues, i'd appreciate it. there doesn't seem to be a centralized association. the only one i found seems to only be in the NW.

I'd start her with speed skating.
There is most likely a speed skating team that practices at your local rink. She'd not only gain speed and coordination, she would learn a LOT about safety beforehand. If there are no local junior leagues in your area, you could always start one, but keep in mind it's expensive. Like, really, really expensive. I was shelling out at least a few hundred a month in gear, supplemental insurance, derby fees, gas, costuming stuff for fundraising, etc. I only did it for seven months, and most of the gear cost was in the beginning, but it ain't cheap. You don't want to send her out there with T*rget pads, kwim?
