get your claws out: bill maher compares breastfeeding to masturbation

Submitted by briefcandle on Sun, 09/16/2007 - 7:11am.

I just watched this several times and each time just got madder and madder.
Here's a link to the video, bc I don't know how to embed it. And then there are my excerpts, mostly verbatim, of the most offensive parts. Believe me, hearing his smug, good ole boy, motherf*cker face saying them will make you angrier.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3DXxgralYF8
3:13 is where he starts this topic, so fast forward after it loads so you don't have to listen to the other shit.
The base of the story starts with how recently at Applebees a woman breastfeeding her baby was asked to cover up. Nurse-in was subsequently held.
Maher had these things to say about it:
"breastfeeding a baby is an intimate act, and I don't want to watch strangers performing intimate acts, at least not for free. it cheapens it"
"[lactivists advocate breastfeeding] because it's natural, well so is masturbating, and I generally don't do that in public"
"too lazy to plan ahead or cover up"
"going all janet jackson on everyone"
"you made a baby, something a dog can do"
"how activism has become narcissism"
"there is a place where breasts and food go together; it's called Hooters"

It's 2am now and I don't have the energy but I want to dig up some email addresses and start bombarding this ignorant f*ck, his station, his program, his show with emails about how offensive and ignorant it was.

Equating feeding a baby with masturbation! Calling activism for the right to breastfeed a narcissistic act, like we're all dying to whip our tits out in public for adoration. We're just feeding the baby, you f*cking piece of shit.

Damn it, I wish I hadn't seen this right before going to bed. I already have trouble enough falling asleep as it is.

Really, if you don't have breasts, you should just say something nice...

And I feel he makes the same mistake about religion. If someone doesn't have belief, that's fine, but making gross generalizations with no experience, well, that's just stupid.

A woman was breastfeeding during worship at my church this Sunday - and nobody batted an eye.

Bill Maher can suck it (no pun intended). I like some of the stuff he says, but this is bullshit. I think most mamas will agree that breastfeeding is not something we enjoy doing in public, not least of all because of attitudes like this. We do it because we need to. I love it when everyone can complain about moms nursing in public and yet there are usually no fascilities in public places where moms can feed their baby's comfortably and in private. Are we just supposed to be shut-ins? And I love the whole "cover up" thing... clearly these people do not have kids. My son is 15 months and I can try to cover up all I want. If I put a blanket over him, he removes it. If I pull my shirt down, he shoves it right back up. And loves to switch boobs randomly and often. You ladies know what I'm talking about. It is beyond ridiculous to think that breastfeeding moms are just DYING to whip our tits out for the world to see. Please!

yep. my 20 month old helps her self with greedy persistant strong little hands that can get finagle their way through any arms and hands crossed over boobs combo. long are the days of covering up her head, thats for sure! and one month old J is not going to suffocate so that somebody with issues may be more comfortable. yeah, I am not dying to whip out my boobs in public. Especialy knowing how judgemental this weird world is and with how paranoid I am of giving any man out there a cheap thrill seeing as people can think of it as an 'intimate' act. God- how long is it going to take before people mature enough to get the fact that there is no matter of perspective- that we are just right and they need to go see a therapist if it actualy bugs them they have issues! As far as feeding our babies comfortably and in private-it may be and should be a choice, but for me screw that! I don't wanna go off and disappear from the rest of the world for half an hour, know what I mean? Especialy having three of em. I don't get out very much and if all the planets collide and I get to go to a resteraunt with a friend, I am not going to go spend most of my time away from my once a every six month outing that doesn't involve swings or groceries to sit in a fart smelling lounge outside the bathroom. Plus, quite honestly if I knew breastfeeding was bothering some randem stranger I'd probably be more apt to do it- and smile!

I never would have gotten out of the house the first year if I couldn't bf publically!

That really made me laugh. I know those hands.

I guess he'd rather have the baby screaming all through the meal. If i'm not allowed to BF in restaurants, i'm not going to stop going. Oh no. I'm used to eating with a crying baby. Maybe Bill there isnt.

i didn't know he was so dumb. those jokes, and not just about the breastfeeding, are jokes my kid could come up with. i wonder what would be left if he didn't cloak himself with politics and headiness, would people still pretend to think he was funny? if the video was edited where only the breastfeeding shit played, i would think, ok he was going for a hooters gag and it fell flat... but the whole thing was dumb. i really thought he was smarter. i'm also a little surprised he has airtime for that shit. what station is he on?

thanks for sharing, but I don't even wanna watch the clip
some people just go too far trying so hard to be funny, I never watch him and never will now. Sounds like an ignorant waste of skin to me.
He obviously hates his mother.

i guess that's what i meant to say. he was trying so hard, it was like i could hear the rusty gears turning. it was embarrassing to watch.

i have it on tivo and was planning to watch it tonight, even before i read this, because i really like that show and i watch it weekly. but it's late and i;m tired so it will have to wait til tomorrow.

that being said, i do want to say something in defense of this show --because i'll throw in the disclaimer right now that this is my favorite show - i love this show because it allows guests to participate in *actual* discussions on a variety of topics that *actually* matter. on TV even! yeah, like the war in iraq, yeah, like this administration's crimes against humanity, yeah, like environmental issues we easily overlook, like how methane from cow's asses is doing more damage to our planet than all the cars out there. like a whole lotta things that are totally skimmed over in the rest of the media.

while i typically disagree --and disagree vehemently-- with at least one of the guests each week on any given topic (and quite often it's with Bill himself, as i'm expecting to on tonight's episode), that;s also the beauty of the show right there. he's not rush limbaugh or michael savage, slamming his POV down your throat and only booking guests that either share his opinion or are too verbally weak to have a fighting chance. this show books guests from so many different parts of the political, academic, jounalistic, and celeb spectrum, and they not only get to disagre, but they get to discuss *why* they disagree in segments that last far longer than the typical two-second lobs and retorts you find on crossfire or hardball. just last week he had on Cornell West and Mos Def as the only guests on the panel and it was fantastic. not because of anything Bill Maher had to say - he barely got a word in edgewise. but becasue these two men were given the time to raise people's awarness to some pretty heavy shit that is, rather tragically, not being talked about enough. check it out on Utube and then tell me where else on television do we get that? certainly not on Meet The Press.

do i like what maher had to say about breastfeeding? oh hell no! his POV on breastfeeding is entirely ridiculous and most-likely intended to be inflammatory. but am i surprised? hell no, this is coming from a self-proclaimed permanet bachelor who openly despises children and fancies playmates half his age!

still, i have to give it up to bill and his show. because there are just so few places in mainstream media where people are given the freedom *and the time* to discuss things that matter, to use whatever language is most comfortable to them, to state boldy (and often coldly) their actual positions. he fought long and hard to create this forum, a forum he regularly hands over to ralph nader and cindy sheehan and dennis kucinich and mike gravel and so many other politicians and activists who are marginalized by the mainstream. i'm delighted this show exists, even when --especially when it pisses me off. i don't want it watered down! even if some middle-aged white dude with a napolean complex reveals himself to be the knuckle-dragging ape that he is. because there's usually someone on the show to balance it out, to put him in check. hopefully that happened in this situation. if not, he;ll catch hell from a huge chunk of his viewers, probably a few of his guests, certainly a handful of his producers, and will likely return to the topic next week.

And I certainly don't agree with the views expressed by Bill Maher here *but* I totally agree with crockmama on this.
Because I am at my husband's office and my son is watching his weekly dose of network TV (ugh - Dora) while I get some "work" done, I am going to need to return to this when I can use my brain.

Thank you, briefcandle, for bringing this up - I totally agree that Bill should catch shit for his comments.
