so i;ve tried to navigate the US passport website to figure it out, but the language is driving me bonkers! i know we have to apply in person, i know where in my 'hood to aplly, i'm just wondering if both BD and I need to go together with her to apply? or can i get the form ahead of time so he can sign it (but would i then have to get it notarized??) so i can just go on my own with DD to apply? finding a time that all 3 of us can stand in line forever is not happening. there's gotta be a way to do it without him? anyone? anyone? anyone do this in the states recently?

you can bring him a form to sign....

but it will have to be notarized. I think we downloaded the form for A, and all went in for M.

Where are you going!?

toronto

and maybe london towards the end of the year - finger's crossed. DD is almost 2.5 and i am totally kicking myself that we waited this long. i went out of the country on my own two weeks ago and was like - woah! what if we need to get the hell outta dodge? dd would be stuck!

thanks for the scoop.

i'm kicking myself right along with you

i've been paranoid about dd having a passport since before she was born, but somehow it keeps getting pushed to the back burner. i finally got her passport photos next week. now i just have to get the notarized forms and go stand in line . . .

hmmm...

i have her original birth certificate, and an official copy. i just wonder if i can do it without BD since we're not married? i would hate to stand in those horrible lines just to find out he has to be there. i tried standing in one of those lines just to ask if he had to be there, and i gave up after a while, since it was barely moving. what a pain inthe arse!

I have to get passports for

I have to get passports for my 3 kids because we're going to Mexico in December. I downloaded the forms but they have to get notorizied. Do you know how much it costs for the passports? That's what's been holding me back. I'm certain it will be a small fortune, but hoping I'm wrong.

if they're under 16 -

$82 each. plus another $60 if you need to expedite the processing.
$97 if they're over 17.

OMG. That's what I was

OMG. That's what I was afraid of. I think I'm gonna see if they are absolutely required. Maybe just two forms of ID for them will suffice? It's only Mexico. It would be almost an extra $500 for all of us to go on the trip if we have to get passports! "Life may not be the party we hoped for but while we're here we might as well dance".- Maya Angelou

you do need passports

or at least proof that you've applied for them (if you're US citizens) to fly in and out of mexico, canada, and the carribean. the law changed earlier this year and as a result there's been a huge backlog in the processing of passports in the US. so they recently made an exception and you can still fly across the borders if you've applied for them but haven't received them yet. not sure if/when that's gonna apply to crossing the borders on the groud.

Hmmm. Good to know. We're

Hmmm. Good to know. We're not flying though.. .I wonder if it makes a difference? We're leaving out of San Diego on a cruise. I'll have to contact the cruise line to see. Originally they told us everyone needed passports, then told us we needed just 2 forms of ID (picture) for everyone. And then told us without ID we couldn't get off the cruise ship. So, I was going to just play it safe and get the passports. But not at that cost times 5. Yikes. I'll have to find out for sure. Thx. I know they cost a small fortune

but they are so worth it - this year, when our passposrts come up for renewal (mine and DH's) we're going to get the kid's done as well.

We decided that it was worth doing "just in case" I figure if the world goes to hellin a handbag, I want to have papers stating who I am and where I am from and get the same for the kiddos. Plus, if we decided to leave the country on a whim, we can!

Though, there's no way we could do it right now - we're totally saving out pennies for this.

I guess I am just saying thatif it turns out you do need them, you can atleast think of it as a worthwhile expense.
