debate tonite *more info*
in case you hadn't heard - the democratic candidates are going to participate in a debate dedicated soley to LGBT issues tonite on teh LOGO channel at 6pm pst (9pm est) it will also stream on their website. should be interesting... though melissa etheridge is moderating, which is kinda lame imho. i'm sure she'll do a great job *finger's crossed* but why not a journalist, someone whose is trained and experienced in asking questions of political candidates? oh yeah, coz people want infotainment, even in their political debates. whatev, maybe she will shake things up. i'm looking foward to it.
* okay, this makes more sense. etheridge isn't moderating, she's a panelist:
Tonight's Presidential Forum hosted by Logo Network and sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign features [journalist] Margaret Carlson as the moderator and panelists [HRC President] Joe Solmonese, [musician/activist]Melissa Etheridge, and [journalist] Jonathan Capehart.

nothing against melissa etheridge, but what that tells me is that they are taking the idea of addressing LGBT issues and making it about reaching demographics. right off the bat it tells me that they don't see LGBT issues as valid in their own right. really fucking lame.

when you are trying to show the political powers that gay people are in fact, people, who are everywhere with everyday concerns like everyone else, it is counterproductive to have an entertainer moderate the debate. like you say, it makes more sense to have an experienced journalist moderate. there are plenty of experienced journalists who are either gay themselves or are informed on issues of particular interest to the LGBT community. having an entertainer do it makes it about a photo op.

so thank you. I agree, a little odd with Melissa hosting--oh...kay.
I will suspend judgement until I see how she does...hmmmmm.
Thanks for posting this!
she is the only entertainer on teh panel. still i wonder why she is there at all. i just hope she isn't given equal footing with the actual journalists.

it's sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, which bills itself as "America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality." so they would have made the call on who hosts their debate.
