From Jeans to Pillow, Potholders, & Apron: PICS

I loved seeing Lapina's pics about the recycled bags. That is so ultra cool! So I wanted to share a little of the upcycling I've been doing lately. Or actually reconstructed clothing, ahem. You can click on the pics to see them bigger.

I had an old pair of jeans that my kids called my 'crack jeans' because I lost a lot of weight this year and they slide down and reveal my backside. This happened one too many times, and I can't abide belts, so they had to go. I was going to just a make a pillow out of them but then had excess fabric so I made a few potholders too and used one of the pockets for an apron! Here are the jeans:

Here is the old sheet I used for the apron. It was clean but had set-in stains:

I've had this skirt for awhile and liked it for it's raggedy, hand-made look, but it is too short for my tastes. I like long, ankle-length skirts and never felt safe or comfortable in this skirt. So this had to go as well. I used this for the apron waist and handle-ties:

Ok! Now here are the potholders I made with some of the jean material. It took about a half hour to make them. I sewed them during an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, LOL:

This is the pillow made with the jean material, it took about an hour. I made this last week and it was the first thing I did:

And the apron pinned before sewing, it took about 20 minutes to get it all hooked up with straight pins:

The apron all done! It took me about 3 hours in total, but I did it in bits and pieces starting last week. I finally finished it yesterday:

I forgot to take a pic with me wearing it, will post ASAP Smile

edited to add: everything was hand-sewn because I have issues with sewing machines. Totally lame, I know. Smile

edited again to add: pic of me wearing it!

Love them! So creative and crafty, mama! You're not lame, I love to hand sew. Yes, my stitches are never straight, but I find it very therapeutic. Thanks for sharing these.

Some people are really into straight stiches. I was on this sewing site once and they used to rag on me all the time about how homemade and unprofessional my stuff look. I was like, well duh, that's because they are homemade and unprofessional! LOL!

hand- sewing is so relaxing, and you can do it while watching TV or listening to the radio. I like to keep a bit of whatever I'm working on in my purse, then if I have to wait somewhere or have a break in my day I can work on it.

I bake a lot so I used to go through those store ones frequently - they get all scorched and ugly looking. These so far have resisted the scorching, I've used them for bakine bread and 3 batches of cookies! who knew denim was so tough? But now I think on it, duh! Smile

You hand sewed all of this?

You hand sewed all of this? That is incredible. Wow! I especially like the pillow with the jean seam down the middle. I made the kids some lunch bags lined with old jeans and they love them.

I love to hand sew, it's very relaxing and it's how I learned to sew as a child. I didn't learn on a machine until I was much older. It's harder to me to use a machine.

Oh I just remembered, in one of my old issues of MSL

they did a spread on denim and had a really beautiful denim quilt featured. You may want to do a search on denim on her site, just to check it out. There was some neat stuff

I have to add

that you are a prime candidate for the old Singer club. I used to be in the "hand sew only" club due to getting too frustrated with machines.
Now I sew with a 1940's machine that could outsew ANY modern machine in consistency. It is hard for most of us to take the leap, but you seriously would be AMAZED with it. KH (733t sewz0r) sews with one too. I am pretty sure mine will outlive me which is wild since it is already 60 years old.
Then you can hand finish things Wink

That's what Ibop says, she learned to sew on an old-school machine in her fashion class at high school. for now I'm content with hand-sewing, it's ok for me. Smile

Nothing wrong with hand sewing mama

I have handsewn whole historic dresses. It is time consuming but a lot like meditation (other then the period needle under the fingernail). Maybe when Ike is older and I have slightly more time, or can be content with one project at a time, I will go back to it. But there is nothing like knowing you sewed something completely by hand!
