Renting a Storefront: Vibe Me Please!!

I have been trying to open a bookstore for over a year now...I've had 2 places lined up including partnering with a couple who wanted to open a cafe. The two storefronts opened into each other but the owner was willing to rent them seperate or together. Anyway that fell through because they are now on the verge of divorce, and I can't afford to lease it by myself.

So I am looking today at a spot that is just perfect for my indie bookstore. It's right next to a piercing place and a thrift store and an indie jewelry/bead store. I would fit right in. Vibe me please, I surely appreciate it!!

*Update*
The storefront guy was really cool, he's in my age group and has sleeve tatoos and seemed all alternative and indie. He liked the idea of a bookstore there, it was a hair/beauty store before. The rent is just $450 a month incl. utilities! Upfront I just need 1st month's rent and a deposit of $900 of course more stock and shelves and stuff. He's willing to hold it until end of August, it's a 2-year lease, and he has cash registers and stuff I can use. I've got my money back from the other place but alas have to pay on my huge gas bill (from winter) with it. I'm working on a money plan to get this together, because I am going to rent this store!! Vibe vibe vibe me! Smile

*Update 2*
Looks like I'm going to have all the money together by August 24th! including insurance and other stuff I didn't include in my original calculations. Smile

Hmm....

So I lit your candle and it had a little extra wick. But the flame is HUGE! I think that's a good omen. Smile

When you're up to it, please post a little about how you got started-- uh, I'm so jealous! Good for you!

well

there is really not much to tell about how I got started...basically I decided to open a used bookstore and started looking around for a storefront to rent. That's it. Since I'm selling mostly used books (my new stuff will be underground or indie stuff the chains won't carry) my inventory can come from anywhere. I've got a garage full of books I bought from yard sales, estate sales, donated by friends and family, and my ridiculously huge personal collection. I love books! I will also get books from various distributers. The rest is just basic retail and biz admin stuff. The hardest part is figuring out your 'angle' i.e how to differentiate your bookstore from all the chain stores, what value you are adding to the community.

thanks ya'll!

I appreciate the vibes so much! I was so worried that this guy would be yet another old fusty businnesman who expected me to open a chain-type store, I dressed up in one of my 'power' suit blazers and actually put on a bra and dress shoes. I did wear my long flare skirt, though, I had to wear something that was 'me'. I could have saved myself the worry and hassle and just worn one of my homemade shirts with the skirt and my thong sandals! this guy had on a tee shirt and raggedy old jeans, and was all pierced and tattooed out. I also got to talk to the bead store owner, she is ultra cool too and totally wants a used/indie bookstore there. I am sooooo HYPED, ya'll just don't know how excited I am!!

nah!

I seriously can't even keep up with online orders of
my own books, I can't imagine how I would be able to process thousands of books. and with used book sales my inventory flow would be too fluid...by the time I got around to putting a book online it'd be sold offline. I may put some of the indie stuff online, like the comics and zines. We'll see! Smile

I am sending you as many

I am sending you as many vibes as I can muster, Mercury. I worked in an indie bookstore while I was in college and it was the best experience of my life, honestly. I know you will be amazing at this and what a perfect location. So, many many vibes sent your way, Mama. Oh, I hope this works out for you!

So excited for you!

Let me know if you need books and what kind! I'm so excited for you. I've been meaning to clean out our library and if there is some stock in there that you'd like, I'd be happy to donate. Smile
