August Wilson's Fences
Yesterday I went with my aunt to see August Wilson's play, Fences. It was absolutely amazing. After the show, we ended up at the same restaurant as most of the actors and it was so cool to talk to them about how they viewed all the characters.
If you don't know about August Wilson, he was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright. His singular achievement and literary legacy is a cycle of ten plays, each set in a different decade, depicting the comedy and tragedy of the African-American experience in the 20th century. (wiki)
Fences is set in the 1950's, and it's the sixth play in the set of 10. The first play (which I haven't seen yet) is Gem of the Ocean, which highlights two ex-slaves who are searching for new lives and then the set of plays moves through relatives/friends of these characters. I didn't notice any specific references to any past characters, but I wouldn't have known if I they had been there. It was just freakin' spectacular. If anyone has a chance to see one of his plays, it's well worth it!
